garden plan help

Hi guys. I have created a plan in table in Word, but have no idea of how to upload it here. Is there any way I can convert it to a jpeg? Anyone done that before?

Please give me suggestions/advice/impressions/etc. Incidentally, I live just outside of Charlotte, NC. Our last frost date is April 15. I have broccoli, tomato and strawberry seedlings.

Oh, and the watermelon is in 4 squares because I don't have much of a trellis, and I thought I'd just let the watermelon sprawl a little, and over the side if needed.

My bed gets full sun all day.

Trust me, that watermelon is going to need all the space you can give it so I hope there's nothing to stop it's sprawl over the sides at least 6'. That's why its best to have them on the outside edge like you've planned.

I assume you have a generally southen wind in the summer. If not, you might want to rethink those corn squares so that they can self-pollinate, or so I have read - I am planting corn for the first time this summer..

From what I understand it's better to plant the corn in a block of 4 squares.

Oh cool! This is exactly the stuff I was hoping for. Keep it coming. Oh, and I have no idea what kind of winds I get. I try to avoid going outside during the summer here (a habit I guess I'll be breaking this year for the sake of my garden!).

Not a huge deal but I would switch the strawberries and carrots, you'll need to get to the strawberries sooner/more often and reaching over the high rise box to get to them might be a hassle. Not really a big deal though, just a thought. Also, what kind of peas are you growing? Are they a bush variety or do they need a trellis or tee pee? If they'll be growing vertically it's easier to put them on the outside (north side). I'm pretty new here too but those are my basic suggestions. Smile

Remember you can do corn 4 per square.

I actually have one end of my box that has 12 inches of MM, and the carrots will be in that end. I probably will move the strawberries though to a side, because I know the girls will be picking off of those fairly regularly. Thanks for that tip.

Valerie, did you mention that because it will allow me to put them in a line? Which will be most effective?

You have 4 squares of corn, you can put 4 plants in each square. However you want to arrange the squares is up to you, as long as they are next to each other. Clear as mud?

I actually didn't want to make the pictures teeny, so I only put one picture per square. Thanks for your help!

I understand, I just wanted to make sure you knew you could have a total of 16 plants in your 4 squares.

Are those beans bush beans? If not, they are going to need a trellis too.

Any ideas on what you want to have in the other free squares?

They're actually peas, and I am going to probably end up moving them to the north side and figuring out some kind of cage. I don't know what to put in the blanks, but I did get those free seeds from that Seeds of Change giveaway, so I might throw some of those in there. This is my first anything, so I just wanted to do stuff I know we love, and leave the experimenting for another season.

In that case, why not fill the rest of the box up with more of the things you are already planting? You can always freeze what you don't use right away. Wink

By the way, I love your avatar. When I was young, I remember walking by a rake, and thinking that it was just a gag that people in the movies pull... I thought I would totally be able to catch it fast enough. Well, I was not... I guess I learned then that sometimes fiction actually mimics life. Who'd'a thunk?
