Trellises.... Empty Trellises....

Post  Healing Garden 4/5/2011, 7:07 pm

Last year I had Mel's Tomato Wagon for my tomato box but didn't need trellises for anything else I was growing. This year I am doing cucumbers, peas, and mellons in addition to tomatoes vertically.

My existing trellis:
Trellises.... 2101458

This year after spending an exorbitant amount of time thinking about trellises and looking at examples of trellises and calculating costs of trellises I went back to Mel's Book and decided to do it by the book. I was looking for more attractive options originally but decided that the veggies would be covering it anyway. I am thrilled with the cost as most of the store bought trellises were at least $30 each and most weren't strong enough for the cucumbers. Hog panels were certainly an option but I don't have easy access to them here in Boston; shipping would have been outrageous; and the cost would still have been over $100.

Four 5 ft trellises total cost $76.19
Four 10 ft electrical conduit 1/2 inch pipes cut in half $8.80
Two 10 ft electrical conduit 1/2 inch pipes cut into 4 ft sections $4.40
Eight elbow connectors $35.20
Eight 2 ft rebar $12.80
Nylon Netting $14.99

I expect these will last a lifetime and so the expense like most of SFG is upfront and then eases up.

Healing Garden,

Congratulations on your purchases to build your own trellises out of conduit. This is my first year using the conduit trellis also and I am really looking forward to my vertical gardening.

I was surprised at how inexpensive they turned out. I am with you on this, they will last a long time.

I love mine and they work great!

You'll be superbly satisfied! I remember after making them and being so happy with how cheap they were..Hmmm, what else can I make outta this stuff? Shocked
