Peas and Trellises

Okay, so I've got peas growing, and actually got a reasonable number coming up, but the question... how do I get them from the square to the trellis.

The ones that are at the far side of the square from the trellis (since the trellis is at one edge of the square) are at least 12 inchs from the trellis, how do you get them to the trellis, is it just waiting until they are big enough and threading them or...

Sorry, I know lots of newbie questions still, the good news is that the rest of my lettuce has not yet been eaten, so the crop protectors are working (Yay!)

Hi arla,

So, the peas closest to the trellis will be able to reach the trellis and grab on. The other peas will grab onto those peas. And they'll all climb together like one big, happy, tangly, pea family! (At least, that's how my peas managed it). Smile

If you want them growing straight up, tie a piece of string from the top of the trellis and let it drop straight down to the peas. They will grab on to the string and work their way up. That's what I do and it works just fine (as long as it's not very windy the first few days so the peas can grab hold)

Both suggested ways work. However, I would also consider placing small stakes in the ground, too. I used smaller sections of pvc pipe, about a foot and a half long, at the base of each plant. Once they got that tall, they had no problem grabbing onto the other peas. I also moved my trellis more into the middle of the square instead of at the back.

I made a Square trellis that worked great except my peas only got about
2 feet tall. this shot is from the beginning of the season.

Thank you. I have some pictures from a couple of weeks ago that show
all my trellises, that Ill post If I can find them I may have deleted them
when I accidentally formatted my cameras memory stick. My pumpkin
plant got to the top of the trellis before it finally decided to have a keeper.
We got 2 and a quarter pumpkins from 2 vines and had over a dozen die
on the vine at tennis ball size I have no Idea what we were doing wrong.
