Onions and Peppers

Question here from a new gardener. How do I know if my onions are doing alright or dying? I planted Texas Sweet and Super Sweet onions from bunches.

Also, My pepper plants are getting talller and taller, but not flowering or anything. I have a green pepper plant, a yellow pepper plant, a TAM jalepeno plant and sweet banana pepper plant. Is this normal?

So long as the tops of your onions are green they are still doing well. If they flop over and turn brown they are done growing and it's time to harvest them.

How long ago did you plant your peppers?

I have some onions then that did not survive being planted. I may not have done it correctly. Several are brown and dried up and others are looking pretty wimpy.

My peppers have been in the ground almost two weeks. They were transplants and one took some pretty heavy wind damage. The others not as much.

It's pretty hard to plant an onion incorrectly. You just put it in the ground. Some folks clip the roots and the tops to help encourage growth. Sometimes you just get a hold to bad transplants. It's just like starting seeds. You might not get a 100% germination rate even if you do everything right.

Transplanting is very stressful to plants. Often times it looks like they have stopped growing or have even died back, but usually it's just the plants trying to recover from having their roots disturbed and trying to get used to their new soil and environment. Most will rebound just fine, but a few might die.

I wouldn't worry about it yet. You should see some improvement soon.

ETA: What are your watering practices? Did you create a true Mel's Mix with 5 composts?

Your peppers need some time to recover from being transplanted. They are pretty slow plants, too. Mine have been in the ground since about the 3rd week in Feb and now have little peppers forming.

I have been watering everyday mainly because the top of my Mel's Mix is staying so dry. If I dig down it is moist. I did use true Mel's Mix with many 5 plus types of compost. Some of the onions seem to be coming around, but many just keep shriveling. I am wondering about planting either too deep or not deep enough. Thanks for the advice, I am going to keep watching them to see what happens and hopefully they will come around. If not I will try again in the fall (if I can plant onions then)?? Still need to do some research on that one.

Elliephant thanks for the encouragement on the peppers. You aren't too far away from me so knowing your peppers took that long helps me be a little more patient. I am just seeing everything else take off so quickly it makes me think something might be wrong when nothing happens.
