Apr 1 So Cal garden report
I have been 'suppose to' move for a few months but it keeps getting put off. So I stopped planting in January. Since I am still here I decided to plant anyway and whoever moves in next can have it. I may even pay to keep the water on until someone moves in.
Peas have run their course but were very prolific after a slow start. The brocolli went to seed too fast but the cabbage was perfect. The lettuce was great and I have a bunch of wild looking celery. Time to look towards summer crops.
B/c I thought I was going to leave I found going to the garden depressing so it is a tad neglected. I may take a before and after picture for posting at a later date.
April is a very active month for gardening. If you are above 2500 ft it may be a different story but in general plant the following this month (please note that this is not the ONLY month most of these can be planted bit it is the first for alot of them.)
Cool weather really hung in there this year and we officially out of the drought! Gov Brown urges Californians to go back to their wasteful ways...OK, that was a line I actually remember from SNL from the previous time Jerry Brown was governor. I think it was uttered by Chevy Chase. LOL
General Planting guidelines:
Here are examples of what can be planted in each square foot:
16 carrots or radishes, onion (or 9)
9 onions, beets, peas, garlic, spinach. bush beans, pole beans
4 lettuce, chard, marigolds, or kohlrabi, strawberries,
1 tomato, pepper(try 2 next time), eggplant, broccoli, cabbage, or corn, cabbage, celery, potato
1 squash, or melon per 2 sq.ft. (or 3ft space – zucchini)
2 cucumbers
1 per square foot: plants that are thinned or planted 12 inches apart.
4 per square foot: plants that are thinned or planted 6 inches apart.
9 per square foot: plants that are thinned or planted 4 inches apart.
16 per square foot: plants that are thinned or planted 3 inches apart.

Of course.

Re: Apr 1 So Cal garden report
Thanks, I'll put it in my "for newbies" file. I've seen several newbies (like I'm not) ask similar questions and what you shared was what they want to know, it would be nice to have it in my notes on my computer and be able to copy and paste it when they ask.
