Hello from Down South
Hi Everyone,
My family and I just set up our very first garden and we were so excited to use the Square Foot Gardening method! Our 3 children love helping in the garden and love the fact that our first little sprouts have started peeking out of the soil.
It's great to have access to so much expertise because I know we'll have many questions as our garden progresses. I hope at some point we'll also have something to share with everyone. We'll be glad to post pics of our garden boxes (we started with 5 - 4x4 boxes) as soon as we can.
Happy Gardening!

Howdy and WELCOME Farmville4real:
Glad to have you as a member and we would love to have you send us your questions and pics. Mary and I lived in Harvey, LA for 4 years so we know the heat and humidity that is there.
What have you planted? What will you be planting and are you planning on doing a 4 season garden? You could very easily do a 4 season where you are.
God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Re: Hello from Down South
Hello and thank you for the warm welcome!
Heat and humidity are definitely rampant in our part of LA (the northshore), even though we're just starting spring.
So far we planted what we thought would be a pretty hardy crop of vegetables and herbs. Since we're newbies, we didn't want anything that might prove too difficult for our first season. We have some peppers, tomatoes, summer squash, radishes, rosemary, mint, tarragon, and a few more.
We would definitely love to have a year-round garden. That's one of the reasons I signed on to the forums...so I could tap into everyone's expertise in how to best manage this. I know that once a plant is harvested, it's as simple as adding a little compost and finding the appropriate plant for the next season. I hope to find some plant lists of crops that grow best in our region...would love to have your input on that, too.
I look forward to being a part of the forums.
God bless you, too!
John

Thanks for the welcome! Things are great over here. Spring has sprung and we're enjoying a brief respite from the heat with a little cold front. I've already learned quite a bit from the forums just browsing through some of the beginner topics. Lots of great stuff here.

Sounds like you're enjoying the same cold front we are. The year round gardening thing is great! I just finished my first winter garden and it's been a blast, even if not everything worked out just as planned.

Re: Hello from Down South
Hello farmville4real,
I lived in NOLA area for 25 years. Went to high school in Belle Chasse, lived in Gretna most of that time and for a snippet of time in Metairie when first married. 2 of our kids were born there... miss that place for sure!!
Welcome to the forums, I'm brand spankin' new, too, and trying to figure this all out as well. Tomorrow is the day I dive in and put my box together, mix my soil, make my composter, set up my trellis... I'm really excited about the process... I have a few plants ready to go and am going now to work out on paper what goes where (again and for what it's worth, lol)... I wish you a successful first year!!
