Well for us in NE texas anyway the mowiing has begun, I dont mind mowing because everything looks so nice afterward. I just dont like the time it takes away from the Ghouse and SFG, I only have 4 acres but when the season starts it is a 2 to 3 day a week activity

You got that right.

A couple of years ago, I read about a type of grass that only grows about three inches tall. Apparently, you can just over seed your regular lawn with it for a couple of years and it is supposed to eventually take over. That is what I want for the areas that we leave in grass. But mostly, I would prefer more garden space both SFG and flower beds. With the amount of water and fertilizer that a lawn takes in this part of the country to keep it looking nice, it seems like an awful waste of resources....

I used to tell my mom that there was only one thing I hated more than shoveling snow.......and, that was mowing grass.

Now, I do both for a living. Ironic.

I would kill for the growing seasons you guys down there have. The earlier the start, the better I do. As it is, last week got me started with cleanups and some odd project work. Good to get the income flowing again. However, this week may shut things down again for awhile. I guess we'll see.

I used to have to mow 2x a week when I lived in Houston - dang St. Augustine grass down there. I have St.. Augustine up here in the DFW area, but it doesn't grow like it did on the coast.....

That being said, I will be happy when my small back and side yard are filled with flagstone and planting beds... That only leaves the front yard and I bet I can get that mowed, edged, and blown for $10 a week by one of my neighbor's lawn care companies....

We removed most of our grass last year. In the remaining, there are crocus planted (and now sprouting/blooming), so dh has a respite for a while until they are done.

Gwynn, is that the Korean mounding grass I've heard about? I'm vaguely curious about whether it might work in our area, as it sounds quite pretty and low/no maintenance for the few grassy areas we have left.

Megan, I am not sure of the name of it. I will have to see if I can find it again. It was from a greenhouse or gardening supply place somewhere in Ontario. What I liked about it is that you did not have to rip out the old lawn and replace it but could just over seed. Our summers are way too short to spend mowing.

As Caretaker for a County Park, any dry day is a mowing day for my DH. We have had so much rain And the mowing seasoon has begun 3040868389 and very little sun sunny that a lot of the ground is still too soggy to do much, but, you do what you can when you can.

At least we don't have to deal with snow pfffftttttt

Hmmmmmmm, that does not look like the picture in the garden catalogue that I remember. However, a lot of MY plants never look like the pictures in the magazines either so it is probably best not to judge by that. LOL!

I would love the name of it if you can find it. I have been toying with the idea of a mowless lawn but everything I have found will not survive the winter here in 4b. If it survives for you in 3b, it will work for me! flower

Funny you should say that. There is a place here in my city in a rather fancy neighbourhood where someone has done that in the front. My kids thought it was hilarious. Would that pass the inspection of your local 'yard police'?

I'm sure that would be a burn-at-the-stake offense ...... possibly even get me drawn-and-quartered.
