Anyone in Southern Florida? Empty Anyone in Southern Florida?

Post  CharlesB 2/27/2012, 12:53 am

I've recently purchased a place near Naples which I hope to start some fruit trees. Eventually when I spend enough time down there will do some SFG as well. I have some questions about planting and watering requirements of fruit trees in that area (Zone 10). If you could help me out please let me know and I will PM you the questions or ask them here. Thanks!

Anyone in Southern Florida? Empty Fruit trees

Post  onalaska 11/2/2015, 9:57 am

Welcome to Naples!  I have a Honeydew Orange, a Meyer Lemon and an unknown lime and grapefruit trees in our yard.  The Orange tree is struggling but I'm sure it's not due to the watering.

We have our trees where the sprinkler system hits them.  The Orange tree is the only one with a dripper at the base.  The Meyer lemon is very happy and produces more than 150 lemons a season.  The Grapefruit tree is new and has only one grapefruit but it is the biggest grapefruit I have ever seen and basically crowded out the other grapefruits.  The lime tree was just a twig when I got it and has grown to about 3 feet tall.  I had to keep it in a pot until it got this big as the bugs just ate it up.  It seems happy now and is producing 6 or so limes continuously.

You should be able to grow any citrus fruit tree in your yard.  If you'll be gone over the summer the rains will take care of watering and you could water yourself in the dry season or use a sprinkler system to do it.

Welcome onalaska! I am in Ohio, and the only surviving fruit tree I have from my dad's mini-orchard is a pear tree. We had such a strange, cold, wet spring here, it didn't do much, but normally it is pretty productive. I would need to put any future fruit trees where it is less wet...the pear seems the least picky about the wet roots.

You will get tons of great advice here, and check out the archives for lots of info, too.

glad you\'re here
