Raspberries

Hi,
I am just waiting for my book to come in the mail. But I was just wondering if anyone had ever planted raspberries in a SFG? Is it possible? I LOVE raspberries and would love to have some growing in my yard. Any information you have will be very appreciated.

If you read the main Foundation website, Mel does address raspberries. Yes, you CAN plant them in a SFG. However, there are some caveats:

Basically they are a permanent crop, once you plant them, that's where they are. And, they also spread underground through their roots and can be very invasive. So, you'll want to plant them away from everything else. A long, narrow box or a 2x2 (basically, a container) will help, as a wider/deeper box is impossible to reach into without getting prickered, and I know that one from personal experience. (I grew up on a very old farm where a raspberry patch had gone wild... it was maybe 10 feet wide and 25 feet long, chock full of rasberries, but we could only harvest around the edges.)

Ashalyn - I plan on adding a raspberry box this year, too. It will go near the strawberry box and it will be a 2x8. I'm really excited about it! Best wishes with yours.

We planted red raspberries for the first time last fall along our garden fence in a bed - not a SFG box. We'd grown blackberries and black raspberries for years and let them run wild at the edge of the pasture, but this is our first time with red raspberries. (We discovered they must be at least 100 feet from the black raspberries.)

I have my raspberries in 3' wide boxes. It works great; just make sure you put the boxes deep enough because the roots take off like crazy. Also, don't procrastinate. Build a trellis right off. I'm moving mine this year and I'm going to use some type of fence/panel because a couple of wires just don't cut it.
