raspberries

I wanted to share a picture of my raspberry hedge. It is 16'x2'. I made the bed 10" deep because it parallels a drainage swale, and raspberries don't like wet feet ( or so I hear). These are "Heritage" raspberries planted in 2013. They are an easy variety to grow, and they are good for the lazy gardener. In late winter/early spring, I cut all of the canes down to within 2" of the soil. Then in spring, I thin them to 3" to 6" spacing by cutting down the weaker looking canes. They do require support as you can see, and that is the hardest part about growing them. In the first year, I harvested 4 pounds, last year I harvested 8 pounds, and this year I expect much more. Also, the birds dont' seem to like them!

I'm glad we have a raspberry thread on the forum now. I'm just starting out with my 2 x 7 raspberry bed:

Today I was thinking about the different types of support I could use. I thought about using 4 t- bars and some twine. I think the T bars would have to be at least six feet tall. Any reason you can think of why I shouldn't use twine? What did you use?

In the first year, I used vertical posts with horizontal beams. I then strung wire between the beams to support the raspberries. The wire had to be tensioned, and I found that the tension in the wire tended to put too much stress on the posts. So I use galvanized steel conduit instead of wire. You may not be able to see it in the picture, but the conduit spans between the horizontal beams.
