Hello from Atlantic Canada

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would say hi I am from New Brunswick, Canada which is zone 5a I believe. i know we have a pretty short growing season. I tend to compensate for that with houseplants. I have three kids 22, 19 and 3 the oldest two are not living at home so its just the youngest and my husband and I these days. I have finally bought the SFG book after having borrowing it several times from the local library.

Rolanaj, $glad you\'re here$ so glad to have you join our group. You will find several member from Canada. I am sure they will welcome you also.

You have the SFG book, Yeah! Very glad you found it in the library and decided to buy a copy for yourself. I hope you got the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING. It is such a valuable resource.

Please feel free to ask questions,if you have them, and if you have information to respond to another member's questions, please feel free to just jump right in.

We also love pictures.

So happy to have another member in Canada. Your growing seasons are much different then ours in coastal Virginia so we welcome your input on how to grow "up there". Remember that Mel's Mix is used all over the world and works everywhere.

Rolanaj.....Welcome to the group.
I live in Maine USA on the Atlantic coast in zone 5a also so we'll be pretty much having the same problems and successes as long as the sun shines pretty consistently this season.
You can check out my blog below if you like.

I know you'll love going SFG. I began in 2009 and have improved and experimented and loved it all since.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I was really glad to finally get the All New SFG book, I borrowed the original one from the library so many times I'm pretty sure they got sick of seeing me. I see a few things have changed in it that seem to make it even easier to get started. I'm really anxious to get started already but with a couple feet of snow on the ground I'm probably going to have to wait a bit.

Rolanaj......Take this first year to build your beds, fill them, prepare them and then buy seedlings to fill them if you can't get a seed starting setup prepared. You'll have plenty to do the first year without starting your own seeds. There's a lot to learn and to try the first year.
But if you have the supplies and the energy, you can even start your own seeds the first year. It depends on you but you don't have to do it all the first season. You don't want to get discouraged. Gardening is wonderful, but it takes time and thought and a little work to get started.
Its wonderful to try some crops and see what works for you, what your family loves best and enjoy the fresh flavors of the garden.
I think you'll enjoy the adventure.
Don't forget to check the seed exchange threads where gardeners list their excess seeds available or their wants for specific seeds. You might something there you'd like to try.

Hi Rolanj! Welcome to the forum. I live in Saint John, NB -- where are you located? I've been doing SFG for a little less than a year. I'm still learning, but I'm hooked. My SFG is on my roof! Lets keep in touch.

Hi Rolanj, Welcome to the forum from the UK SFGers. I am at the same stage as yourself. Just waiting for the weather to pick up to get started. You have come to the right place, there are some great people on here who are willing to help in all aspects of SFGing. Enjoy youself and if you have any questions ask away. @dstubbs I'm just outside of St. Stephen so not far from you at all. An SFG on the roof sounds really interesting, hope you've posted pictures.
@jumiclads by the looks of the snow outside I'm wondering if Spring is going to ever get here.

I have some small beds but I didn't mix the soil right, I unfortunately got the new SFG book after I had set up the beds. I'm thinking it might be best to redo them. Its so hard not to be able to actually do anything when you have all these ideas in your head.

I am new to SFG also. I live in central Oklahoma, zone 7. I will be putting in my first garden this year. I already have a cherry tree & 2 hazlenut trees & bee hives. I stumbled onto the SFG book @ the library & am excited to get started. I love you

We are practically neighbours. I have met a couple of others on the forum here from NB - both are in the Sussex area.

If you do a search of "dstubbs" as the author, you;ll see various posts with photos of my roof garden. They're not all in one place.

Were you affected by the flooding a few weeks ago?

Always glad to have a new member here on the forum. Hope you found the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book as it is updated from the original, and has so many features that make gardening easier and more productive.

Rolanaj, I know what you mean about getting the wrong mix. That happened to me last year (my first at SFG, after decades of row gardening). We have decided to take up the mix in those first boxes and remix them for spring. They grew some things fine, other things not so fine until we added soil amendments, so we want to start over and get it right this time.

As others on here well know by now, my two biggest newbie mistakes were not realizing that a 3.9 cu. ft. bale of peat moss decompresses to 8 cu. feet, (my first mix had twice as much peat as it should) and when Mel says to use five different composts, he means five different types, not just five different brands. If the compost mix isn't rich enough, your plants will not grow well.

@dstubbs I live fairly high up so the flooding missed me but the road I live on was washed out in two places and a few people were trapped in their homes I believe. There was a lot of damage in the area and you had to take some creative routes to get places.

@ander217 I had some of the smallest giant sunflowers possible. They were just a few feet tall and very spindly. The tomato plants came fine as well as the marigolds I planted with them. Everything else was just sad looking, I think it was a combination of the wrong soil mix and maybe planting some things together that shouldn't have been.

I did try peanuts for the first time and they were rather fun, I didn't get a big crop but I was pleased that they grew at all.

I have been reading through some of the posts on here and have been really impressed by the pictures I've seen.
