Well all the way up to June 10th, and finally a chance to post June update for Canada.
First of all my grapes are starting to show, aren't they cuteCanada: June whats growing on in Canada Dsc_0264
My peppers have not done well this year , and I figure I have not babied them long enough, so am keeping them covered until we get some more warm weather. Everything else seems to be thriving thoughgh
Canada: June whats growing on in Canada Dsc_0265
Hard to believe I planted them in February, and they are only this big. I figure that either I did not up pot them soon enough OR perhaps the greenhouse was just not warm enough for peppers to thrive, especially at night
Canada: June whats growing on in Canada Dsc_0266
My beets are going gangbuster, they are not in SFG since I have not changed over all the beds yet.
Canada: June whats growing on in Canada Dsc_0267
This a sample bed with tomatoes along the right side, which is north, and carrots in the other two squares on the left side and towards the back are 6 squares of early potatoes. I pulled out a few plants to have for dinner on friday, but there was nothing there...... Sad the plants LOOK healthy on the top though

this is my cucumber bed, it is a sunken SFG, Dug down 7-8 inches and lied the bottom with wet shredded paper and then filled it in with mels mix

artichokes, I think they need some compost......they look hungry.

Thelma sanders squash (gifted to me from a SFG member )

I have never successfully grown cantilope, so this year have tried an early version and growing in tires for added warmth. Last year I covered the ground as well to warm it, but they just did not ripen before the cold weather came in the fall.

First tomato, I am sure everyone else is already eating tomatoes, however I will be patient Canada: June whats growing on in Canada 950477

Compared to my first years of SFGing, this year seems to be the worst. Just about everything is at a standstill, due, I think, to the cool, rainy and continual overcast weather.

We get a couple of days sunshine, then back to more of the same. I can't help thinking that commercial producers will not be able to produce as much this year and that the price of veggies will skyrocket.

So far I have harvested a couple of leaves from various lettuce, kale, chard etc., but have to be very careful that the plants can stand it. I have a bed of green strawberries, and have picked one very large berry that is the only one that has ripened. That one berry weighed 25 grams and tasted heavenly. No flowers yet on the snow peas. The scarlet runner beans are making progress, so far no flowers. Potatoes seem to be doing well. Toms and peppers are stationary, I am sure they should have been much further along.

We have thunderstorms forecast for tonight and tomorrow, with temperatures in the low 70Fs, and rain for the rest of the week.Sad

Hi Kelejan
It certainly has been a poor year, I was just comparing my pictures from last year and I was way ahead.
I might be a bit ahead of you, in that we have been eating the occasional strawberry for a few days.
I live just down the road from the Shuswap lake and it is flooding, they are sandbagging down there and expecting it to go up another meter in the next day or so. Highest level since 1972 they say.
I have a few tomatoes maybe 4-5 cm....
How are your potatoes?

My potoes look OK, GWN. At least the bed with Yukon Golds. I have a couple of pots with Dakota Pearls in them: they have not yet shown through but them I had forgotten I had them so they were only planted a short while ago.

Next year I will buy my seed potatoes early instead of leaving them until I am ready; those two varieties were they only ones they had left, and I had intended to plant early, medium and main crop to see which did best.

Looks like I have another couple of strawberries almost ready to pick. I will give them another day or two. Amazing what small things can give pleasure.

I have a camera and I need to find my battery charger and take pictures and learn how to post them. Once I learn, there will be mo stopping me. I enjoy looking at pictures and it is only fair to post some of my own.

My sweet peppers are setting fruit, as are the dwarf tomatoes. I even have a tiny Kansas melon that is blossoming!

I have potatoes growing in a 55 gal barrel but their leaves are being eaten, by what I have no clue? It's not potato beetles. The only beetle I've seen so far this year is a Mexican bean beetle. I did some reading today and it might be spider mites or flea beetles, although I can see the flea beetles on the eggplants but again, nada on the potatoes?? Mystery for sure.

Garlic is almost ready to harvest in the 5 gallon tub. The garlic in the raised beds are sending up scapes now, so they won't be long either. It's an area with about 50 garlic in it, so a decent space for fall crops. Guess I had better decide what to plant in that section once the garlic harvest is over. That would be an excellent place and time for me to consciously plant in SFG style bounce

Will be anxious to see your pictures.
One thing I noticed last year, having been MUCH further south for 14 years.... is that it took forever for everything to get growing, but once they start growing, they catch up to the southerners VERY fast.... because we have MUCH longer days.
They are growing in leaps and bounds, just in days. It is pretty exciting every morning. I have peas, they are not fully ready to pick, but almost.
My tomatoes are actually a reasonable size today, and just need to ripen.......
Maybe I need to take some more pictures too

Do you have slugs? I have some, they are small, and do big damage.
My DH goes out at night with flashlight.

The other thing that is eating some of my leaves are ANTS.......

Enjoyed your pictures from Up North. Your grape picture is so adorable, love the spiral growth of the fruit, quite artistic. Smile

Yes, I'm a midnight flashlight warrior as well, but I can't see them on the potatoes. I would imagine it would have to be a very ambitious slug to climb up the outside of a 55 gallon drum then down the inside to feed on potato leaves. Seems like a lot of work when just across the driveway are all kinds of tasty pumpkin leaves and summer greens.

that would be assuming slugs are smart....
I think of them as mere eating machines....
And just the fact that they DO cross roads.....smunch....shows how silly they really are.

I hope you find out what is eating them, are they earlys or lates ? Are you able to take pictures?

I spoke too soon re: storm.
It was hot and sunny this am now it is pouring with thunder and lightening, I think many peoples homes will definitely flood now.

I went out and covered my compost as well, it was getting water logged .... GOOD suggestion.

Stay safe, GWN! I hope your garden survives the heavy storms.

I'm growing Nicola potatoes a gold fleshed, red skinned, midseason variety which is the lowest on the glycemic index. We had trouble finding seed potatoes this year so we chose these because they were something different.

I'll try taking a pic.

I am doing fine and my garden is doing fine, however this is a picture from just down the road from me, all the houses on that block are partly under water.
The lake is so very high.
There is flooding in many areas of BC this weekend, with a high snow pack and fast meltingCanada: June whats growing on in Canada Dsc_0282
