I am going to give my inlaws the All New SFG book and some seeds for Christmas...

What seeds would you reccommend? They live here in Post Falls as well...

I was trying to think of some "fun" stuff....like maybe German Giant Radish? Stuff like that...any suggestions?

what are things they like to eat?

that's what i'd do.

also, are you enclosing a 'coupon' for a 4x4 of mel's mix to be made in the spring? i remember last year there were some folks who did that - and they had their kids help them with that aspect. that was a big hit.

Chiogga beets are cool looking and colored carrots - somebody sells a pack of mixed colors (can't remember who just now). "Bright Lights" Swiss chard is very pretty. Fennel is also pretty and easy. Purple pod beans are good. Kohlrabi is very easy to grow, very tasty eaten raw or cooked and weird/cool looking. Of course some kind of radishes for that quick reward, too. Radishes come in lots of different colors and shape, too, obviously and you can sometimes find packs with multiple varieties.

Let me go look for the link to the place with the multicolor carrot pack.

Here's one

This is the other one I've seen

I don't know them super well, so I am not sure what they like to eat...but they don't seem to picky.

No, I'm not offering to build their boxes...they are perfectly capable and have more funds available to them than I do to me...they are already interested and planning on building a SFG in the Spring...I just know they wouldn't go buy the book which I feel is invaluable...so I want to give it to them..and I thought it would be fun to throw in a few seed packets of some fun stuff. Smile

Thanks odd duck...those are some good suggestions...I probably will throw in some carrots, I just hesitate to since they take so long to grow...but the in-laws aren't as impatient as my children..LOL so I bet it would be fine!

Is anyone else giving SFG for Christmas? If so what are you doing?

ah, makes sense!

bright lights swiss chard was fun to grow but i had trouble getting purple and yellow to germinate. got lots of green though. they all taste good. yum!

watermelon radishes were fun for my kids this past year. they weren't as hot either.

maybe a selection of edible flowers? marigolds, nasturtiums, sunflowers, borage? borage was a very interesting plant - and tasted like cucumber. but it succumbed to whatever killed off my squash plants - i think the squash borer got them all. i really liked the borage a lot though til it died - the flowers were exquisite. i put them in ice cube trays and in salads with my nasturtiums. kind of a tea party girly thing but sure did taste good. Smile

ooh and to be a complete enabler for your recipient - maybe purchase one or two of those windowsill seedstarters - holds about 10-12 plants so they can experience the thrill of growing stuff inside and get even more excited about spring. . *grin*

Middlemamma,

What a great gift! My nieces and nephew gave my mom in July for her 80th birthday 80 seeds. They were a variety of seeds to start her fall garden (and kept separate per veggie). Carefully counted 80 seeds. This meant a lot to her.

So seeds that can be grown in their area should be great!

Give SFG for Christmas :) Empty Dear Santa, I've been good! :)

Post  Lemonie 12/2/2010, 4:22 pm

This is EXACTLY what I was wanting for Christmas this year! However, since our money tree produced about as much as our pitiful potted garden this year- the whole family is forgoing gifts and just getting together for fellowship. I'm praying very hard that Santa will either bring me a really good job or SFG book and supplies anyway.

bounce I believe! I Believe!! I BELIEVE!!! santa

If Santa were to bring me seeds, I think I would want a mix of lettuce and a couple different tomatoes, peppers and beans to try.
