Thanksgiving Harvest

What has everyone been able to harvest for their holiday meals?

I picked four green beans (to join the ones I've already saved) and one strawberry this morning. Later, there will be baby greens, spinach, green onions, bok choi, parsley, sage, marjoram, rosemary, and baby dill.

My menu will be simple, but relatively healthy, including green salad, steamed fresh green beans with dill and a touch of garlic, mashed red potatoes with giblet gravy, homemade (from scratch!) cornbread stuffing, roast turkey basted with a mixture of melted Smart Balance and dry white wine, and a fruit salad for dessert.

My felines will feast upon a lightly-sauteed turkey liver. Perhaps that will serve as a bribe to convince them to leave my SFG alone! Fat chance....

I'm particularly thankful for the SFG system, for this forum, and I want to give special thanks and appreciation to Mel for simplifying gardening and making it feasible for so many thousands of people to grow food for themselves, their families, and their communities.

What a nice post, Donna. Although I'm a day late I'll chime in with a second amen.

The day before Thanksgiving freeze threatened so I harvested six heads of broccoli ranging in size from about 1 1/2" to 3" across, one small carrot, three small beets, one huge turnip, arugula, lettuce, fennel fronds, collard greens, one celery root, and parsley. We are having the winter root veggies today in a roasted mix.

I harvested some of the Brussels sprouts. They were yummy!

I am impressed too! I've never had such uniformly sized sprouts on a stalk.

I had to dig through 6 inches of snow to find the beets. The carrots, onions, taters, and broccoli were easier to find in their covered beds. The winter squash was in the shed already. Yummers-we probably didn't need a bird!

I have a few lettuce hanging on for dear life...we had the first snowfall here, too...

so the gardening is now only in my mind for a few more months.

I was able to harvest garlic greens, one mature mini-carrot ("Little Finger), chives and chard, along with various sprout thinnings (basil, celery, collards) and some mustard greens. I also had one delicious green pepperoncini to put in our stuffing!

My latest dill planting isn't mature yet, but I did also have some dried, left from the last round.

Just before Thanksgiving, I picked a plastic grocery bag half full of ripe Cherry & Roma tomatoes. My Italian flat leaf parsley & oregano are still going strong and I have a good many green Better Boy tomatoes. My cabbage & broccoli plants are still looking good.....fingers crossed.

In my greenhouse, my cilantro & sage are sprouting. I also have Rosemary plants that I moved in there that are looking good....(I'll probably be repotting those soon from their summer urn pots) and more rosemary seeds planted along w/thyme.

I've also planted some lettuce seeds in pots in my greenhouse. This is the first year I've had a greenhouse so everything is pretty much a trial effort. It sure is fun though!

I had a BIG potfull of Collards for Thanksgiving. Camprn I too am envious of your Brussels Sprouts !! Hope Everyone had a wonderful holiday !!

I still have to bring up the last of the beets, parsnips and a few onions before the snow comes. Even though it is so cold and nothing seems to be growing, it's nice for this last harvest. I'm still crying about your BS Boff!

Thanks, I wish I could share! They were so easy to grow, just took a long time and some feeding (dried blood)now and then. I will grow them again next year.

Camprn, those are gorgeous - if it weren't for the fact that I'm the only one who will touch a Brussels sprout at my house, I'd plant them for sure next spring.

(I had Brussels sprouts several years ago at a restaurant in Zurich - they sauteed the just-tends sprouts with browned butter and garlic. Never thought I would ever think of asking for more Brussels sprouts at a restaurant, but oh man, they were good.)

Wow, Camprn. Those sprouts are amazing. I've never grown them before but you are adding inspiration for me to try next year.

Did you start your own transplants? How many months until harvest?

What type of greenhouse do you have?

Ander, I've posted pics of my greenhouse in a couple of threads here. If you can't find them, I'll repost them here.

It is a greenhouse that we bought from a place that manufactures the little metal storage buildings. It is basically the same structure as a storage building but w/the clear siding.
