HARVEST THANKSGIVING
My sister in England put a picture on her Facebook page of the harvest display in her church that she was going to attend this Sunday.
Completely different to the ones I had when I was a child. This picture consisted completely of canned goods. Nothing that I could see that was fresh grown.
In the boarding school I attended, the display consisted of sheaves of corn, fresh tomatoes, cucumber, cabbages, onions, every other veggie you could think of, beautiful fresh-baked bread, and all of the highest quality. The school did own a 600-acre farm adjacent to the school and everything came from there. We even had a couple of sheep and some rabbits one year.
That was one of the days when the local townspeople were invited to "The school on the hill". Other days were Christmas Carols and Easter. On those days our choir and orchestra practiced for days so that we would be perfect.
Our school was located on a ridge that overlooked the town, so we all had a beautiful view and the townspeople were always aware of us as they could see us up above them every time the raised their eyes.

Re: HARVEST THANKSGIVING
Wow, that is a great story, Kelejan. Too bad the harvest event didn't include any fresh produce or homemade foods....times change, not always for the better.

Re: HARVEST THANKSGIVING
Scorpio, the "harvest" of course was food gathered for the food bank, and we all know that people who rely on food banks only get crappy stuff as that is what is generally donated and the food banks seldom accept fresh food because they do not have the facilities to store it. Whne I donate to the food banks I only give what I would eat myself as I believe that you are what you eat.
In many cases people do not know how to prepare fresh food nowadays and they often only know how to heat prepared food which is not cooking.
In our town we do have an organisation called The Stone Soup Kitchen" that prepares a nourishing meal once a week and they have been doing it for years. They are wonderful people. I donate more to them than anyone else, especially different kinds of organic canned beans from the Eden brand. I wait until there is a sale on then I can buy more for my dollar.
At Christmas time I help with sorting of the donations for the Christmas Hampers, that is when I realised what the quality was of the donations. Endless packets of of macaroni and cheese, Campbells Soups especially vegetable soups, noodles, and other packet stuff and out-of-date cans of anything that people want out of their pantries.
