What is the most thoughtful gardening gift have you ever received?

My daughter went to the Virginia Tech family farm day in Nottoway County on Saturday. They had qute a few animal exhibits. And she brought me a BAG OF ALPACA POO hyper for my compost pile. I was tickled pink. She could have brought me anything, but she was really thinking of me at the time. Take a minute and share...

DH got us a new chipper-shredder this year after the old one wheezed its last breath. To be honest, the old one was a better shredder -- man, it could reduce stuff to atomic components! -- but hopefully this one will be a little more reliable. The old one spent more time in the shop than it did shredding!

My daughter and SIL gave me two types of hand held clippers. I really needed them and they are my most used tool. They were so dang happy to see me finally interested in SOMETHING. Like middlemamma - the garden saved me. And the clippers are saving the garden. Smile

I was once given a pair of long goatskin gardening gloves with gauntlets that went almost to my elbows, designed for rose gardening (I lost one in the move...snif) -- they're fantastically soft, wear like iron, and don't feel clumsy.

I'm looking for a new pair for me, and another pair to send to my M-I-L, who goes through a jillion pairs of rubberized cotton gloves every summer.

Does anyone have gloves made by Womanswork? I've known of the company for years but never got around to buying from them.

My son built my 9 raised beds so I could begin gardening.
Then he and his wife bought 6 cu yards of garden loam to get the beds started.

My husband rototilled for me, even though he absolutely hates any sort of yard work. (Yes, my boxes are dug in.) Then he cut the landscaping timbers, drilled holes in them and staked them down, spread landscaping fabric and tacked that down. He built my high-rise boxes for me, and cut the rebar and conduit when I asked him. Also, when he saw my bottle of neem oil and the little squirt bottle, he bought a serious hand-pumped wand sprayer, and even did some spraying.

Could I have done all that? Yes. Did he want to be He-Man, despite hating yardwork? YES! Bless him! cheers Of course, now he doesn't have to mow the lawn anymore....

My DH bought me a beautiful garden spade and digging fork from Lee Valley Tools. I love them and use them all the time. They are balanced so well that they are very comfortable to use.

My daughter also gave me a beautiful garden journal from Lee Valley Tools as well. Awesome gifts, both of them.

this was really enjoyable to read all the threads!!! Smile

my favorite gardening gift is when 2 years ago, during a monthly budget meeting, and i broached the subject of garden funds, my husband offered to give up his 'game'money - and did! and since then, that's where my funds for garden expenses has come from. bless his heart! Smile

the garden has turned out to be a financial gain for our household as well as a great way to teach my children core education subjects and additionally, a really fun hobby for me. Smile I always dislike 'costing' the household anything so this has been a real win win for us. Smile

My mom and dad (mom really) has always given me the funkiest gifts. I've gotta admit that like her, I'm not the best gift giver. This past Christmas though, she blew me away. When she had come to visit she noticed that I saved my coffee grounds by setting the paper filter full of them on the back of the sink till I was ready to go outside. High Class!! So she gave me a stainless steel, filtered, kitchen compost bin. I've wanted one for a few years but am too cheap to buy it for myself. Now I don't have to waste freezer space to keep all those apple cores and potato peels waiting to go out back.

My husband gives me the gift of generosity by saying, "Go ahead...", every time I find some new variety I want to try, not to mention all of the physical labor he puts into making the boxes, mixing the Mel's Mix, and replenishing the compost. He also bought me a wonderful little book called Trowel and Error by Sharon Lovejoy that really helped me to see the wonder of gardening when I was feeling overwhelmed in the very beginning. She also has a wonderful book called Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars: Grandma's Bag of Tricks that is full of meaningful ways to connect with children. I'm going to try some of them with my son!

Non-gardening but related, recently my husband ordered me the two Bread in 5 Minutes books by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois, and he ordered me the storage containers for the master dough too. It was a very thoughtful thing to do, done by someone who is much more logical than thoughtful Smile
