Howdy Folks:

I tried to post this a couple of days ago and I don't think it posted so I'll try again.

"While sitting in a waiting room I picked up a back issue of Scientific American and found an article that talked about an agricultural scientist that has isolated a fungus from the roots of plants that grow near the hot water geysers in the Yellowstone National Park. By injecting the fungus into the roots of tomato plants he was able to keep the tomatoes growing in heat up to 148 degrees F. That is as hot as the middle of a medium rare sirloin.

I can see it now, The great American southwest desert converted into one huge Square Foot tomato garden".

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Definitely what we would have needed in my hometown of Blythe, CA. The average daily high in July is 109, according to weather.com We didn't call it a heatwave unless it was over 120.

I remember during one heatwave my little brother wanted us to sleep outside on the trampoline. I told him it was too hot. He said "But it's night!" I called time and temperature and it was 111 degrees at 11:30 at night!

Growing tomatoes at 148 degrees Empty RMO tomatoes?

Post  ander217 7/25/2010, 8:50 am

Ward, would you call those tomatoes RMO instead of GMO? ("Rootically Modified Organism")

I could definitely use some of those this summer. It has felt 148 degrees in my garden for several days.
