Planting Question

I am getting my SFG ready for Fall, but want to know Should I plant something in ALL my squares in my garden? Or save some squares for later planting to make the Fall harvest last longer? I will plant lettuce, radish, brussels sprouts, broccoli, bush beans and carrots. Thanks.

Succession planting may be a good idea for a fall garden, especially in an area like yours which has a long fall growing season. If you check your Louisiana Extension Service website, you can download the Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide which will give you a range of dates for planting each veggie.

I'm more inclined to focus on succession planting in the springtime because of problems with cool-weather veggies bolting once the temps go up, an issue that doesn't arise in the fall. Also, most cool-weather crops are decent keepers, so you can harvest, store, and use over a long period of time. The exception for me would be lettuce, since it doesn't keep. Not sure how well radishes keep, but mine don't seem to over-mature and get woody in the fall.

Amazing, isn't it, that fall planting season is nearly upon us southerners? According to Clemson Extension Service, I could already have planted potatoes and could plant broccoli seeds today -- and I haven't even placed my orders!

Thanks for the advice. I already have the " Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide " and plan on using it as a guide for planting. I will have my seeds ordered by this weekend and start them as soon as they get in. I can't wait.

Well, thanks to your post, I got my act together and started ordering seeds yesterday!

So far I've ordered Packman broccoli, Toy Choi bok choi, Cherry Belle radish, Savanna mustard, Mizuna, Buttercrunch lettuce, and Redbor kale. I also ordered Yukon Gold seed potatoes from Gurney's and will now have to wait for them to catch up with themselves and inform me that they have none in stock, LOL! Still have to get carrot seed, garlic, and onion.

What do folks do for seed potatoes in the fall? Our local feed/gardening center tells me "ya cain't get none this time o' year." Most of the online sites I've visited would seem to confirm that -- and yet Clemson Extension says I could be planting potatoes now!

I don't know about here to get seed potato , but I did finally order all my seeds last night. It is still hot down here in LA so I should be OK starting this late for the fall garden.
