I bought some sod for my lawn, but it died. I left it in the sun to dry for several days and added it to my compost pile. Is that OK, or should I take it out? It's extremely hard to turn.

Re: Composting
Hi,
Two things to consider and then decide. The sod farm was sure to use chemicals. Are you OK with that? In my neck of the woods, all sod that I've seen comes with a nylon mesh embedded to help hold it together (think one inch chicken wire made of nylon). A lot of local commercial recycling places won't take the stuff because the mesh clogs the machines.
Sod is very heavy, and it will take a long time for the pieces to start falling apart so you can pull the mesh out. It will be extra work-but if the price is right...

Re: Composting
I have pulled up quite a bit of sod to create my garden space this season. Instead of putting it directly into the compost pile I have cut it into manageable squares and piled those on top of each other with root side up. I will let it all sit there and rot on its own. It should take about a year.

Thanks Boffer, I didn't even think about the chemicals. I'll pull it out. I didn't feel good about doing that anyway.
