update for Shoda on my Garden in San Leandro
Shoda,
Here's the latest pics from our garden. On the whole it appears to be thriving. A little trouble with snails eating my broccoli. I surrounded it with a slug shield I made from a water bottle. Since my last post 3 weeks ago the peppers actually sprouted. Next time I'll sprout them a few weeks early indoors.
Garden full view:
broccoli:
Swiss Chard:
freckled romaine:
Cali sweet pepper:
orange pepper:
roma tomatoes:
cherry tomatoes:
red beets:
bush beans:
snow peas:
zucchini:
cucumber:
basil:
marigolds:

Re: update for Shoda on my Garden in San Leandro
Thanks for the pictures. Everything looks healthy and like it is growing great. Not sure how you make a slug shield though. Do you cut a tube or plastic or something to go around the base?
I especially love the look of the spotted romaine. We love unusual looking veggies and that would look great in a salad.
My broccoli is about at the end of its cycle. Yours looks like it is just starting to get big. I was thinking of trying to start some more inside and them move it outside. Since it gets pretty hot here in August, it might be a waste of time but I thought I would give it a try.

I am so jealous you can start maters and peppers outside from seed!
Your freckled romaine looks gorgeous! I can't wait to see the progress.

RE:slug shield from plastic bottle
Shoda,
I just find a plastic water bottle that is smooth around(smart water)and cut off the top and bottom. Then I cut that into two open-ended cylinders. Then on one end of each cylinder I cut crown-shaped teeth about an inch long all the way around. Then I bend down the spikes so they protrude at a 90 degree angle. I place the tube with the spike end up and the smooth end borrowed a quarter inch into the soil so snails and slugs would have to crawl over the spikes to get to the seedlings. I got the idea from garden tips on Youtube. Supposedly snails and slugs don't like to crawl over the sharp edges.
