My Frat Boys Empty My Frat Boys

Post  LaFee 6/14/2010, 4:30 pm

Okay...I have the little-bitty grey slugs that everybody finds on their lettuce...they drink the beer I put out for them, they die, no problem.

But now? Now I have slugs I refer to as Frat Boys...they big, ugly, obnoxious, and seem to live to slurp up the beer I put out for them before making Swiss cheese out of my lettuce. (I found one IN the beer the other night and figured good, I'll just let him drown...nope. The next morning he was gone. I hope he had a hangover.) These bad boys are bigger than an adult's thumb, and they make hash out of anything with leaves. You can see one here:
Red Slugs - Rowdy, Drunken Frat boys!

I have a resident hedgehog, so I sure don't want to poison them, but egad, they give me the willies. Only saving grace is they're sure easy to see.

Those are a really bright red. I've never seen anything like it before. I got the heebie jeebies just looking at that picture. I sympathize with you LaFee. Wouldn't want those guys in my garden. Good luck! My Frat Boys 311672

My Frat Boys Empty Red slugs

Post  ander217 6/14/2010, 5:44 pm

I actually think they look amazing. Too bad they don't mind their manners.

I don't know if this would work, but since they are so large perhaps they need a higher alcohol content to do them in. You might experiment with mixing in a little rubbing alcohol or hard liquor in the beer containers.

Sprinkling salt on slugs is an old remedy, so you might also try mixing salt with the beer.

Good luck.

I was going to suggest the salt thing too. If you are not too squeamish, just go out every evening for about a week and pick them off the produce and you are likely to get the bulk of the population. The salt is kind of gross, and who knows what your hedgehog's salt preferences are, but what the heck.

Oh, LaFee...that is too funny.

You could sprinkle some copper powder down in the soil around the plants...or try the copper wire trick. I too may have to resort to that. I have little gray slugs on my lettuce and spinach as well. (No keg parties in my garden though...I do not want those big red oafs joining in!)
I have copper fungicide powder that someone told me would work (is that safe?), but I have to wait fot it to dry out a bit first. The soil here is soaked due to 14 out of 15 days of rain this month! I wish it would stop already....or there will be slugs galore!!!

(has it been overly wet where you are?)

Yes, that's been the other issue. I bought a box of Bt, but it hasn't been dry enough to use it in 10 days! We've got some sun and a good breeze, so hopefully it will dry out a little. (My yard needs to be mowed in the worst way, but it's been too wet to cut!)
