Here's my purple cauliflower.
I bought some Violet Queen purple cauliflower seed this year to start. Right now I have two in the beds this size....
The head is about 3" across. I guess I won't have to blanch these babies.
I have no idea how it tastes, but I'll let you know when I harvest one.
You can still see some of the raindrops from the light shower this morning.

Wow Bea, it's gorgeous! I have them planted too, but my first were eaten by snails, and the next batch is not very big yet... it's nice to know already what they will look like in a few weeks hopefully
Re: Here's my purple cauliflower.
Absolutely gorgeous! I'm adding that to my list for next year.

Re: Here's my purple cauliflower.
Back in September 2011 I planted 'Purple of Sicily' cauliflower. It is now time to harvest my purple cauliflower because it is about 6 inches and I am beginning to see some separation between florets. With so much foliage it seems a shame to just put it into the compost. Has anyone ever eaten the foliage of the cauliflower?

Yes , strip out the central stalk of the leaf unless you like it as it can be a bit chewy ( I'm happy to eat it raw or boiled )

That looks so neat! I'm not a cauliflower eater but it's beautiful! Since your up north, did you start this indoors and if so, when did you transplant it?

What a stunning, gorgeous picture.
Just love cauliflower and now you have inspired me to grow this too. Bakers Creek catalogue has a picture on page 23 but your picture is much better. Off to order some right now!
Thank you !

Re: Here's my purple cauliflower.
Hi Rose, remember me? I had the same cauliflower mix you did. Did you have any luck sorting your seedlings and getting the other colors?
Mine were planted too late and were just an experiment - free seeds and my squares were available so why not? In spite of the frosts coming a good month later than I had planned for, it was still too late for me. I got one tiny purple head, one teensy-tiny white head, and the other one never grew a head at all before all the frosts came. Here's a picture of my purple one. I had already harvested all my broccoli and had stopped spraying with BT, so you can see evidence of a cabbage worm at work.

Re: Here's my purple cauliflower.
Hello, Gwennifer!
Yes and no. I definitely wanted the purple cauliflower so I thinned out the sprouts without a reddish edge in two squares. I got my two purple cauliflower. Yeah! The other square has one white cauliflower still growing. That one was an all green sprout. And the last square was unsuccessful due to my chicken entering my bed. Luckily I stopped her before she ate the other sprouts. I tried putting in another seed but it struggled growing maybe due to the weather or something else. I should have tried 3 seeds, not just one. I didn't get a green cauliflower. This was my first time growing a fall garden and I am happy with my success. We eat cauliflower once a week-- I wish I had planted more. Now I want to try a recipe for the cauliflower foliage. Suggestions?

Re: Here's my purple cauliflower.
Boffer made stuffed cabbage rolls using his broccoli leaves instead of cabbage leaves. Here's the thread:
https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t7811-stuffed-broccoli-leaves
Another person on that thread said they steam their leaves and serve them with hot pepper vinegar.

I am excited about the outcome of my purple cauliflower. Husband prefers it raw compared to being steamed so I won't be able to let you know if it turns white when cooked.
Re: Here's my purple cauliflower.
Sanderson, it is absolutely gorgeous! What variety is it?

Re: Here's my purple cauliflower.
Here's my purple of sicily cauliflower. It's a little unclear, but apparently this particular variety is actually a broccoli. It feels more like a broccoli -- not a hard "shell" like cauliflower. A little disappointing. I broke off a piece and it tasted good. Slightly sweet. I'll probably harvest tomorrow. I have one other flower on the way, and then some others that have enormous leaves but no flower. Maybe I can use the leaves as wraps?
