The SFG advantage
I have now harvested 2 squares of potatoes (about 10 'taters total). I still have one healthy growing plant so will wait on that. Point being, I took one of those squares, since it is in a high rise now, and planted some carrots so it would have 16 inches to grow in instead of 8 (this is my only 8" box, all the rest are 6"). Already on the second crop in my SFG! No wasted space, no wasted time!
Re: The SFG advantage
great idea.....I'm curious as I've never grown potatoes before....so, can you only get 1 crop of spuds/season? Could you have planted more potatoes there if you had choosen?
I think I'm gonna try potatoes next yr. I scored a 20' board from my neighbor the other day!!!! It's 8" too.....awesome.

Re: The SFG advantage
I did not like the look of the leaves on the potatoes so did not want to follow with another crop. These only took two and a half months so I don't know why they could not be planted again now.
Late potatoes
I had planned to replant my empty squares now with a late potato planting, but after researching it I found that fully-grown potato plants can die when temps consistently go above 95 degrees. It is recommended to wait until late July or August or later depending on location to plant for a late fall crop.
Late potatoes grow at the same time that late blight strikes, which makes a second crop more iffy.
Some varieties apparently do better than others, but I still plan to give it a shot with what I have and see what happens.
