My beans have just made it to the trellis and started to climb. But now all my lower leave are turning yellow and brown. Is it a fungus? Is it a deficiency? Some pics are below.

Any ideas what is wrong?

My goodness, I have been searching and searching and SEARCHING the web to see if I could come up with any ideas, and I am not finding anything that fits your photos.

One question - what has your weather been in the last few weeks?

It has been warm, 80-90. We've also had quite a few days of rain the last week. The box is partly sheltered, so they shouldn't be getting too much water. Not much sun this week.

Should I cut off the affected leaves regardless of what it is?

I have been thinking about it and in the normal course of plant growth leaves grow and leaves die. Not because the plant is sick, but b/c that is what plants do. I think some of us, in our micromanagement of our gardens get too caught up in what is normal if it doesn't look like a picture from a catalog. This is just a theory.

That said, lower leaves, due to their proximity to the ground are more likely to get splashed with cooties (scientific name) and to suffer from it. If a leaf looks sick, I pick it off and throw it in the trash. In my experience even plants with less that stellar leaves often produce fruit OK.

And with that said, it helps to figure in the mathematical probability of my being full of hot air, which is higher than average. What's wrong with my beans? (brown leaves) Icon_smile

I don't mind leaves that are not perfect. Most of my salad plants have holes in them. I was a little concerned at how fast the beens seemed to go bad. You read about all those plant diseases that render your garden unusable for years and it makes you a little paranoid. As long as it isn't some dreaded disease, I'll cope.

So nobody has seen this before?
