I've noticed a few posts mentioning the difficulty in finding 5 different compost types to get started. I also had to do a good deal of running around to find five. So what are SFG'ers using, and where did you find it?

My 5 were:

Composted cow manure - Lowes
Composted mushroom - Lowes
Humus- Ace Hardware
Composted Hen manure - Standard Seed & Feed
Worm Castings - Wal-Mart

This is in S.E. Atlanta/Decatur, GA.

I've found:

Composted cow manure - Lowes
Composted mushroom - Lowes
Composted steer manure - Home Depot
Humus- Home Depot
Composted sheep and peat - Local garden center (RICK's in Colorado Springs ... Rick's also has worm castings, but was too costly for me on top of the vermiculite.)

My MM is a bit devoid of variety....so far, I've only got 3
Our Home Depot only had manure compost (not sure from which creature this originated from Let's talk compost. Icon_eek ) we also got humus compost.

A local Garden World garden center had shrimp and seaweed compost, a wee bit pricey at 9.99 for a 40# bag but I happily sprung for it.

I started mixing it in with the manure compost and it was shall we say funky.
Had the most pungent sulfur smell that had me thinking about how happy my chiles and tomatoes were gonna be when they wrap they're little roots around this stuff!!!

Honey doesn't know it yet but he's taking me to the hydroponic store this wknd for some more variety! I also plan to get some alfalfa pellets for the pile I've got cookin'.

I found all mine from a local greenhouse.

I have worm casting, mushroom, chicken, steer, cotton bur. I also found some organic liquid fertilizer, Fox Farms products.

Do a search on Google for local Greenhouses and Nursery, you may be surprised what you find. Good Luck.

I just went to my local supermarket (King Sooper) and they had three kinds right there... Sheep, Cow and chicken... all from a local organic source!

Don't count out unusual possible sources! (Hookilau... check Pathmark!)

Let's talk compost. Icon_eek Ya know....I hadn't even thought of Pathmark!
I'm gonna have to check that out today....I wasn't really in the mood to head towards the city to the hydro store.

I've got one only 2 minutes away too!!
Honey promised me one O dem tumbly Compost thingies this weekend. I'm planning to use that to mix my MM before I empty my fridge of all the veggie scraps I've been saving for the last couple of weeks.

Good thing too, I was just about to start freezing the stuff Let's talk compost. Fresse

I have done a couple of mixes since the first one did not fill my box. So far I found.

MO Botanical Garden Black Gold - StL composting (when I specifically asked they told me this is a brown only compost)
Cow manure - Home Depot
Humus and manure - Home Depot (a mix of 3-4 different items)
Mushroom Compost - Lowes
Humus - Lowes
Worm Castings - Whole Foods
my own compost mix from last year which included green, brown, and chicken manure. i Since I had not heard of SFG then I did not have enough for a full mix but I will have plenty for next year.

How big was the bag of worm castings?

I saw some at our local Hick's garden center but it was only a pint container....is that enough?...for anything?....flower box maybe? Let's talk compost. Icon_rolleyes
