My Dog is Eating My Plants!!!
UGH. Something is eating my sunflower plants and I have a sneaking suspicion it is my chocolate lab.
I guess tomorrow's agenda should involve getting something to dog-proof my little sprouties

cayenne pepper!
crushed cayenne pepper around your plants is a good deterrent. It sets a dog into fits if it gets too close

I hear ya there. Can't keep the Great Dane out of my strawberry patch for some reason. We tried the crushed pepper back when we had a dachsund when I was little. The little bugger would go right behind us licking the stuff off the plants!
talk about a hot dog
wow just name that lil dog Tabasco! That blows my general practice out of the water.

No travers - I'm sure it works on most dogs. That dog was warped. He would snatch wasps out of mid-air and eat them. The dude was cuuhraaayyseee.
some like t HOT
WOW that's just wild. I had a Boston Terrier that liked carpenter bees, but never seen a dog eat wasps

That reminds me of an old neighbor.
They had 2 Jack Russell Terriers and they use to jump on top of a chain link fence and run down the pipe chasing anything

Our dog is pretty crazy, too. I'll try the cayenne pepper ..... but barbed wire might be on my shopping list for today

Large pet stores carry something called "Apple Spray" You can spray it around your plants or on them with no damage. Dogs think it's a pungent smell and will avoid it. It's how I have taught my Giant Schnauzer not to bark, not to dig, etc. Good luck!

My great dane loves the taste of apple spray. He gets excited if I bring out the bottle and will let me spray it directly into his mouth.

Ha, Ha, there is no accounting for some dogs taste. You'd have to put in a HUGE fence to keep a great dane out - of anything.

Re: My Dog is Eating My Plants!!!
I used plain old ground black pepper to keep my Cocker/Rottweiler mix (no, that's not as weird as it sounds) from digging halfway to China in my backyard. I'd fill the holes, then sprinkle pepper liberally (I bought a 1-pound shaker jar from Costco just for the purpose.) Worked like a charm. Ended up throwing away about half the shaker jar -- he figured out within a week that digging was not a good thing.
I had a girlfriend who tried Bitter Apple when her ChowChow mix wouldn't stop chewing furniture legs...crazy dog just chewed the furniture even more because she liked the taste, too...so my friend tried diluted Tabasco sauce. Nope, licked and chewed THAT off, too. Can't remember what she finally ended up doing.
My huge Lab used to eat flowers and grass - now I routinely give him carrots (yep, just hand him a big carrot), the core or stems from broccoli and cauliflower, and the occasional big bowl of frozen peas or frozen green beans. He gets his veggie fix, a full belly and some extra vitamins without many extra calories, and I get to keep my flowers.
I think he knows if he sticks his big nose in my SFG he's gonna be UNDER it!

Dog deterrent
Spray the area you want protected with OC spray. You can find it any where you find personal protection gadgets. Just be careful not to spray into the wind and not near any windows or doors to your house. You will be choking for hours! It stopped my dogs from digging. I just sprayed the area they were digging, when they went back to the spot, they smelled and never went back.

Ugh - quote for truth. I've got one and she's a character to say the least. I planted a bunch of stuff yesterday and she went right behind me mouthing all of it to "test it out".
My golden retriever is more of a problem right now - he likes to stand in my strawberry pryamid box... I think it makes him feel taller and superior to the Dane.
Re: My Dog is Eating My Plants!!!
Moth balls work great for several problems. Dogs, Gophers, and snakes all hate them. I keep a few in the garden area at all times. I think they smell good also.
