Vermiculite in Hawaii
Hi there,
Does anyone know a source for vermiculite in hawaii?
I noticed there will be sfg workshop in hawaii coming up,
so maybe there is a source for vermiculite in hawaii somewhere,
I would hate to have to use perlite instead.
Thanks
Troy

Hi Troy,
If you are on Oahu, try Pacific Agricultural Sales & Service, 91-262 Ola'i St. Kapolei, Hi 96707 phone 808-682-5113.
I got a 6 cubic ft bag for about 43.27. This was for the medium grade. The coarse was out and wouldn't be in for a while. Far as I know they still had a lot of medium left.
Aloha,
Jan

Medium grade vermiculite
The medium grade works fine for me. I can't see any difference in plant growth between the coarse grade.
Pacific Ag will stock the coarse grade, but what they'll do, according to the sale clerk, is wait until they have enough of a substantial order to bring it in. Guess we need to spread the word on SFG!
At first I got the 8 quart bags from Lowes as well. It was super fine. There is another garden shop called Wally's on Beretania st. that told me they could order it. However I suspect it is coming from Pacific Ag as well, as the clerk said the same thing about its availability.

Alternate Vermiculite Source
Pacific Ag is out of vermiculite right now, but taking names on their waiting list; should be another 3-4 weeks, and they said it will go fast.
I wanted my vermiculite NOW - so I started calling around, and found someone in Waimanalo who has it. It's Island Grower Supplies, 41-1143 Waikupanaha St, 259-8420, owned by a real friendly man named Fred. He gets it from Therm-O-Rock in Chandler, Arizona. He is generally a wholesale business, but he will accommodate people's needs, and was interested in SFG. He has 3.5 cubic foot bags for $22. The bag is marked coarse, but the particles were smaller than I expected.
Hope this helps someone!

Also Crop Production Services sells it. They are starting to bring in more coarse since more people are requesting it. They're in the Pearl City Industrial Park near Sam's Club. 454-0041. Approx $25 for a 3.5 CF bag. M-F and they close at 4 pm. No I don't work there..... I just use them a lot....

Re: Vermiculite in Hawaii
I went to the Koolau farms in Kailua this past weekend.
They had vermiculite (3 cubic ft 39.00) and coconut coir (2 cubic ft bricks 9.00 on sale regular price 12.00).
This may be closer for some SFGers on the Windward side of the island or for those who can't make it during the weekdays to Pacific Agriculture. Koolau Farms is open on Sat and Sun!

Frre Compost!
I recently went to the Xeriscape event held in Halawa. They were giving out free compost. It is good compost! It looks like coffee grounds. It was promoted as mulch but I used it as compost in my SFG. My plants love it! If you go there with your own shovel and containers, you can take as much as you want FREE, every Saturday!
Thought I'd post this here in case you were also looking for compost too.

Vermiculite Database
Howdy Folks:
Check out the SFG Forum Vermiculite Database. If your source is not listed there please add it. At first your source will be at the bottom of the list (there are almost 900 listings) until the database is resorted. I check several times each week and resort then.
God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Found vermiculite on Kauai from Forum
I had called all the ag/garden folks I could think of and then found that Crop Production Services carries vermiculite on Oahu and found they do here on Kauai also. Happy me and my friends.

Current price of vermiculite
Price update for Vermiculite from Pacific Ag: 53.45. Currently out of stock, but should have a shipment next week.
This is the cheapest I've found on Oahu.
They also have Peat for 26.40 3.8CF bag.

OahuSFG, Thank you for the update. Did you report this in the US Vermiculite DATA Base as an update?
Re: Vermiculite in Hawaii
Thank you. I'm not sure how to edit or update the Data base though. Do I just make a new posting?
