I have a space behind my box where I put weed cloth over the grass. I am putting some of my container plants there, and I was thinking about letting some of my vining plants spill over onto instead of trellising. I was mostly thinking the zucchini, but I am also growing watermelon and cucumber. I have a trellis for the watermelon and cucumber, but now that I have that space, I might buy some larger watermelon type, or expand the number of zucchini. Is there any disadvantage to letting them grow on the ground?

Not at all, that is how everything else usually grows Smile I'd say go for it if you have the room.

  • they could get stepped on
  • they could rot on the bottom side
  • the grass can swallow them up

That being said, I do it all the time! I have the space and am not diligent about training vines up trellises. I'm just careful not to repeat the above mistakes I've made!

I have a pumpkin and watermelon plant I would dearly like to let sprawl except that I am certain that it would be completely ruined by the dogs.
