First Tomatoes
Today I ate the first vine ripened tomatoes from my SFG. Only 3 cherry sized Yellow Plumb toms, but they were yummy! At the moment 7 of my 11 plants have set fruit.
...on a related note, how exactly does one tell when a Green Zebra tomato is ripe? I mean, it's green after all. :suspect: I've attempted to grow them in the past but they never set fruit. Now I have 2 that are covered in them.

Re: First Tomatoes
Congrats !!! I have yellow cherry tomatoes and they were transplants, but I had 3 ripen to share It was nice to have it right off the plant I like to think of the first ones we get as the "encouragement produce", like gambling just enough to keep me hooked.
Im definitely hooked. SFG anonymous ?

p.s. and yes to the zebra question, I may have one in my lot of tomatoes My neighbor started so many tomatoes and lost an idea what some were. Im ok with that I got free plants from a friend and a surprise too ! So in case I have a green zebra Im looking forward to the answer and will put that on my list of maters if I dont.

Answer
I have never grown Green Zebra Tomatoes before, but I was just reading the seed catalog last night and I remembered reading how to tell when they are ripe:
Quote from Johnny's Seed Catalog: "...ripe just as the green fruit develops a yellow blush, accentuating the darker green stripes."
Hope this helps!
By the way, this is my first post on the SFG forums! I am a 2nd-year SFG gardener! :-)

Re: First Tomatoes
Thanks for the tip Read'em. It helps. I went ahead and picked one today to "find out" if it was ripe. Nope. Now I'll wait until I see that yellow blush.

Re: First Tomatoes
Does the "yellowing" apply to all green tomatoes? My kids planted a German green. I was wondering that myself.
