How to Grow Onions from Seed: Tips, Tricks, and More
Good article from Victory Seed Company's eletter on growing onions from seed.
I've grown onions from seeds for years, and had great success with them. Typically I start the seeds by sowing them in a flat, and then pulling the seedlings apart to transplant into the beds. But, in the last few years I have found that they can just as easily be started directly in the soil without transplanting - even leaving the onion seedlings together in a multi-sow condition has worked great. The past two years I learned that I can sow bunching onion seeds in the bed in the fall, cover them with straw after they germinate, and let them grow all winter long. Early the next spring pull back the straw, and soon they are ready to pull.
