Broke my Arm
For senior citizens, falling can have a bad outcome. Trip-proof your homes and garden.
I tripped over an electric cord that was out of place. Whap! Face plant on the padded carpet an hit my shoulder on the edge of the door. Two (2) fractures, one spot of pulverized bone and the humerus ball is slightly out of place.

I feel your pain
I am so sorry, I know your pain..
May 2020,covid time
tripped over a garden hose while rushing to cover new planted Hosta babies with a sheet in anticipation of a late frost.
Shattered the elbow. Surgery, yada yada yada
DO ALL OF THE PHYSICAL THERAPY YOU CAN. I did, still not 100% but does not slow me down AT ALL. I as 69 at the time.

Re: Broke my Arm
Thank you, Dani. A shattered elbow must have hurt like the dickens.
i saw the surgeon today and more X-rays show the bone is in 4 pieces from 3 fractures. I go back in 2 weeks to see how the healing is doing. If not good, then a shoulder replacement. Don't worry, I'm a big believer in PT. I've been going for 10 months to regain normal use of my right leg following diagnosis and removal of a synovial cyst in 2021.

Re: Broke my Arm
Sanderson,
I got to the Forum late on this one, but I'm sorry to hear about your mishap. I hope you are able to cope with the pain and are mobile enough to get around. The fracture you described sounds like a slow recovery ahead. Your doctor will probably strongly suggest a shoulder replacement, as the joint components may be damaged enough to compromise mobility of your arm. Gravity always wins in a fall

Re: Broke my Arm
YS, thank you. If I don't show signs of healing by 3-3-23, when they will take more X-rays, then yes, a shoulder replacement is the next step. At least the doctor is skilled. He did my husband's shoulder. I better be well enough 4-1-23 to plant out the starts.

OMG that's awful! Sending lots of warm hugs and thoughts from the South Pacific. Hopefully it won't slow your gardening down too much this coming summer!

Re: Broke my Arm
Optimistic news. The short story is that the X-rays taken 3-3-23 indicated that the bone sections are still in place and will probably heal. I start PT next week.

That's great, sanderson! All the best for the PT, we know you actually do it (as opposed to just going to the appointments)

Re: Broke my Arm
Oh no, what an awful time to pull a stunt like that! But there is never a good time for us oldies to break something. I hope you heal quickly.
I had hand surgery last week & am very limited in what I can do, but I'm learning to garden one-handed and my hubby is doing most everything for me.

S,
Hope that you are learning to get by with one arm. It's quite a setback, especially when there's things to get ready for Spring planting. Both Physical and Occupational therapy are the best ways to rehab a broken wing, but do not try swim therapy- unless you like swimming in circles

You're a trooper Sanderson. I'm excited to see the healing advancing. I just completed PT myself. It was very revealing and extremely helpful from a Nurse view. Thank you Physical Therapists!!!

Re: Broke my Arm
Dixie, So good to see you. Yes, poor timing on my part. I have seedlings inside and a target plant out date of April 1, Mother Nature cooperating. I amended most of the beds in the fall and only planted a small winter garden. But I left the pepper bed to clean and amend for spring. Dumb, dumb, Dumb. Husband will have to do it.dixie wrote:Oh no, what an awful time to pull a stunt like that! But there is never a good time for us oldies to break something. I hope you heal quickly.

I keep meaning to ask, how is your arm doing now sanderson? I hope you're managing to get the all-important spring gardening tasks done!

Re: Broke my Arm
Thank you for asking. I think it is doing good for 9 1/2 weeks at my age and osteoporosis. Tomorrow, I have an MRI on the shoulder to see if there is soft tissue damage and to get a better look at the healing bone. My daughter came up to plant my starts as they were blooming indoors and outgrowing the little pots of MM.

Fingers crossed the MRI goes well And great that your daughter was able to help out. If I was seriously injured everything would just have to stop...

Re: Broke my Arm
I know that feeling of helplessness. I couldn't do anything for several days. Showering, laundry, cooking, even getting covered with a blanket. If I lived alone I would have needed some home care.
