Clamps for High Winds
Recap: My friend lives in a crazy high wind area of AZ, near Scottsdale I think?Soose wrote:Winds: I'll ask her what she is clamping her bird netting with to her tubular frames
Someone here was mentioning high winds and bird netting on an EMT tubular frame.
I know she tried several different methods over the past three years and that she has
happily found something that stays on... this is what she has found worked.
And here's her answer...

They come in various sizes I use 1 inch pvc pipe. The picture is of 1/2 inch clamps."

These also work.

Re: Clamps for High Winds
Just fyi. The same friend said she found she needed more of those previous clips than expected, had to order more due to the high winds.
And then, she used these last winter to secure fabric (she uses tulle) at the ends of the tunnels.:

Wow. Those are heavy duty! Possibly overkill for tulle? Then again, I used plastic clips for mine (from Aliababa) when I used tulle because they were (kind of) attractive. But plastic eventually cracks in the sun.Soose wrote:Just fyi. The same friend said she found she needed more of those previous clips than expected, had to order more due to the high winds.

Wonder where termiters get their tenting clamps? Those should survive a hurricane.

Re: Clamps for High Winds
That is the downfall of plastic. I've been using and reusing the black binder clips since 2014. I wash after each season and store for the next event.
Re: Clamps for High Winds
Mark,
Very high winds where she is.
I am only assuming she uses the tulle on that end, because when I asked what to get, she said buy tulle... I vaguely remember bird netting at some point in time. Her weather in AZ is extremely changeable.
Sanderson, I have a lot of binder clips and I use them for all sorts of things, but don't they rust in the garden?

Might also try those plastic zip ties. They work well for me when needed and are pretty tough. Cheap, strong, and just cut them off when not needed..

Yes, they rust but they still work. I've been using the same ones since 2013.Soose wrote:Sanderson, I have a lot of binder clips and I use them for all sorts of things, but don't they rust in the garden?

Re: Clamps for High Winds
Thanks for creating this thread Soose, and thanks for the information about the clips that your friend uses. They look great. Sorry, I haven't had much chance to look at the forum the last few days or I would have replied earlier. They look great and I will definitely try to source some if the ones that I recently bought on EBay (pictured below) don't work out. They are holding up pretty well so far but the winds here have been relatively mild in the last week or so. I have also purchased some bungee cord and bungee hooks (will take a while to get here as coming from China). I will thread the cord through the base of the veggie-net and hook it onto my trellis poles with the hooks. I'm hoping that, and the clamps will do the trick.
At present I have threaded clothesline wire through the base of the veggie-net and tied it to the poles but it is really time consuming to tie and untie the knots each time you want to access the beds.
Sanderson, I initially used binder clips/bulldog clips like you, but they just didn't cut it in our winds. Maybe yours are heavier duty than mine.
I spotted a wascally Wabbit in our back yard today, right between my two SFG beds! Never seen one before. My partner chased it around our yard in his slippers (I should have videoed it ). It slipped out a gap between the fence posts. I hope it doesn't come back with friends!

Re: Clamps for High Winds
We have clamps like the one you're using but for woodworking. And I remember the very same report coming from my friend in high winds... Ties on netting taking too long to untie to get into the garden.
Wascally Wabbits, , thanks for the laugh this morning. And good luck. They're so cute... Until they cross the line into the garden, then it's "Run Away, Run Away!" Wascally critters have not yet discovered my new garden. But that's another thread...
I was trying to figure out the typo when Markcq wrote about termite clips, never having heard or seen such. But yesterday, this friend wrote back, saying she had observed a tented house for termite treatment while out walking where she's visiting in S. California, and reported to me that the same type of metal clips are used for termite tents. Just bigger. Another friend who lives in that area replied, oh yes, seen those. Everyone appears to have seen a termite tent and clamps except me!
I will be trying the binder clips. I have a lot of them, snagged from the dumpster when an office closed down. But we don't have these high winds on a normal basis. And when tornadoes are in the area all bets are off! if we can enclose the entire garden with fencing, I won't have to use nets, eventually. At least on the raised SFG beds.
