N&C Midwest March 2022
It’s time to start seeds, think about hoop houses or cold frames, and plan warmer crops out!
It’s been a strange, icy, coldish winter here…I’ve never seen this kind of winter with the freezing rain in Ohio. When I lived in Tennessee yes, but that’s been a minute!
What are you all starting? I am starting lettuces and celery. Spinach in my experience likes cold. Might try it under lights not on heat?

Re: N&C Midwest March 2022
Can you believe it is March already? Only 19 days until the first day of Spring? Won't be long before the trees will be budding, the Rhubarb and Asparagus will be popping out of the ground.
I have pepper seedlings started, in addition to the bunching onions, leeks, kale, and swiss chard. Still enjoying the fresh leaf lettuce and spinach from the cold frame, but looking forward to planting in the open beds. This year I have decided to put the tomato cages and plant in the ground instead of the raised beds in order to free up more room rotational crops in the beds. Ah, I love planning....

I've got several seedlings growing already - and will start basil, lettuce, greens, tomatoes and more flowers in a few weeks. I need more room!

Hi! I am in zone 5b. Do you think it's still too early to start eggplant and pepper seeds indoors? I'm thinking these would go out possibly between May 21st-May 28th?
Thanks in advance!

Eggplant and peppers need 10 to 12 weeks - and about 7-14 for germination .. so count backwards from there. I've got mine started and up already. Tomatoes are next week.JAM23 wrote:Hi! Peppers take longer to germinate than tomatoes, so go ahead and start them. A heat mat with a probe thermometer is a good way to help them along, says the woman who started the pots 3 weeks ago and is still waiting for the peppers to germinate.

Re: N&C Midwest March 2022
Took the straw off a couple of the beds today so the soil will warm enough to transplant the spring onions soon. Last fall I covered the beds with a layer of Starbucks coffee grounds, including the filters, and then about 6" of wheat straw. Today, 5 months later, I took off the straw and put it in the compost bin. But, there was no sign of the coffee grounds, and only tiny pieces of coffee filters left on the soil. The combination of composting and the earthworms got the beds ready for planting.

Well, seed starting is underway with tomato seeds pre-sprouted this past weekend. Many of the seeds are now ready to be placed carefully in starting mix. I'm out of room under the grow lights, so the cold loving seedlings will have to go in the patio greenhouse soon. Again, I have way too many seedlings.

I started all my cool weather stuff upstairs or not on the heating pad under lights. They did fine!

Just got back in from amending the cold frame, replaced broken fiberglass, and added a bit of vermiculite and composts. Planted radishes, OK, lots of radishes! Love them! Turnips and spinaches.
A couple of my old legacy boxes look pretty bad. I am having a friend build me a new 4x4 to make up for the loss. But hey, it’s spring!

It’s cold! That wind! I’m going to close my cold frame here while the sun can still help a bit!

Re: N&C Midwest March 2022
I'm located in Northern Illinois and between the snow, rain and cold temperatures I haven't been able to get any of the cool weather crops in! I just have traditional raised beds that I SFG in without covers so that impacts when I can get things outside. Feeling like I am falling behind with sowing spinach, radishes, and peas! If I have to wait another week to get these crops in, will it be too late?? Ugh

Yes, my Zone 9A summer garden is planted. But, when all of you are enjoying your lovely green, healthy gardens, I will be fighting every pest known to mankind.

Not too late at all! I haven’t started my sugar snap yet. Probably will this weekend! Come on over to April and we can talk!
