N & C Midwest: Jan & Feb 2022!
Happy New Year, midwesterners! Raining here, cold front moving in tonight. Just perusing the catalogs that are coming in every day now—some exciting new things to try! I ordered an Aerogarden with the herb pack and heirloom salad green pack, too. Looking forward to that (my birthday present to me, lol).
My kids got me a dehydrator for Christmas—I am excited to trying that too.
Whatcha all doing/dreaming about?

Can't believe it is a new year already! All of the seeds are ordered, and we're ready to start a new season.
Note for Urban Farmer Seeds today:
"It's January and it's time to start planting in zone 6! You can start indoor sowing of a few cool season crops like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. It's even a great time to start strawberries from seed! Start cool crops in late January so they can be transplanted in late March!"
Took advantage of the very warm day, and before the rain started, to pick some lettuce and spinach out of the cold frame. It is going to be great year!

That’s crazy! To think we can start planting? I need to replace my clear fiberglass top on my cold frame. It broke when it was put together, and until this late fall was held together with packing tape!
I better get a move on!

Re: N & C Midwest: Jan & Feb 2022!
I definitely am getting excited about this year and trying some new varieties. That is one of the best things about seeds—they really are very cheap in the scheme of things.
So new varieties that I’m trying are these:
Bakers:
De 18 Jours (radish)
Easter Basket (radish mix)
Pinetree:
Pumpkin Pepitas
Melon Ginkaku
Flower Cleome Cherry Queen
Still checking things out! What are you all trying?

Re: N & C Midwest: Jan & Feb 2022!
Interesting to see you added Cleome, SR. I've raised those for more years than I can remember. In a former life, back in the early 70's when I had a commercial apiary, I was introduced to the "Bee Plant" as a nectar source for the bees. I planted a fence row of them, and have had them ever since. They are annual's, but they freely reseed themselves every year.
For this year, I have some new seeds that I am going to plant. They are called Rocky Mountain Bee Plant (Cleome serrulata). Can't wait to see how they do.

Re: N & C Midwest: Jan & Feb 2022!
I ordered Caledula, and also ginger and tumeric tubers. I managed to save some potatoes from last year - they have been in my fridge.
Looking forward to starting onions, shallots, violas and leeks later this month. Let the planting begin!

OK, just ordered CORN for the first time…gonna put it in containers. And a couple replacement seeds.
Excited about this year! Oh yeah, plus I snagged a box each of small mouth and large mouth canning lids!

Re: N & C Midwest: Jan & Feb 2022!
I have plenty of jars and rims, but of course lids are one time use! It was the first time since “the pandemic” that I have seen the lids by themselves for sale!

Re: N & C Midwest: Jan & Feb 2022!
Thanks for the link - I just ordered a few boxes. I've started to make vanilla and extracts now as well so those jars sit for a year before I can use them.
Garden content: leek and onion seeds are up. Parsley will be started this weekend. Next week peppers, eggplants and flowers.

My onion seeds that I planted last Friday are up, but I just realized that I forgot to plant the leek seeds. That is now today's job.

Where do you get the information on how to make extracts? They are so expensive!nrstooge wrote:Thanks for the link - I just ordered a few boxes. I've started to make vanilla and extracts now as well so those jars sit for a year before I can use them.

There is a Facebook group for VanillaPura (they are a company that sells vanilla beans and has a youtube as well. They can take up to a year, but so much better than store bought. If allowed, websire is vanillapura. comScorpio Rising wrote:Where do you get the information on how to make extracts? OG, You almost need road snow markers so you don't do a face plant in the rings.
Re: N & C Midwest: Jan & Feb 2022!
Lol! So true! Lots of snow! Like a blanket…a cold, cold blanket…..
