Pre-mixed Mel's Mix is here!

So, one of the biggest questions we get asked is where to find the components of Mel's mix. Peat moss, Blended compost and most important, Coarse Vermiculite. Well, in response to popular demand, we now have Mel's mix potting soil, pre-mixed and ready to go! We actually started a limited test run last year and learned some valuable lessons about keeping up with the manufacturers and checking the quality of the mix. This year, after more testing, believe that we have a commercial quality product. Not only that, but we have a distributor that will be putting our Mel's mix in Home depot style store and nurseries!
Our first run will be to a limited number of stores in the south of the united states, but if you must have it, here is what you can do. Go to your favorite home improvement store or nursery and ask them to carry it. Shipping just a couple of bags is too expensive and so right now you only get Mel's mix from our site by 'local pickup' but if a we ship out a whole truck at a time, the shipping cost becomes doable.
We have two mixes ready. A standard mix for the depot stores and a premium mix(more fun stuff added) for the nurseries.

For those of you who have been camping, do you remember that smell when you first wake up after a nice rainstorm and you get out of your tent(or trailer for you rich folk)? That wonderful woodsy smell. That is what this mix smells like!

You can get more information about our new Mel's Mix (or buy it if you are local, or buy enough to make the shipping cost worthwhile) by going to our webstore and checking the accessories.HERE
By the way, if any of your are entrepreneurial minded, you can order a truckload aywhere in the country and sell to everyone else! It needs to be at least a truckload(1000 bags) to keep shipping costs down. Let us know!

I hope you will be able to market that to distant locations soon. There certainly is a demand for it.

Re: Pre-mixed Mel's Mix is here!
I just tried to see if I could buy it at my local store and was told that it was unavailable. I then called the customer care dept. of Lowes (not the local store) and the gentleman told me that if I wanted it, He would send a message to management of the district (a conglomerate of local stores) and see about getting it in for me!
In other words, call lowes itself(1-800-445-6937) and speak to web orders customer service about the soil. Here is the info.
Garden Time "ready to use" Square Foot Garden Soil
Item #:308781 | Model #:GT 11670
They can contact the area and see about getting it in for you guys! Hope that helps. Alan

whoa, I must be losing my mind!. I just pulled up the link and it too says not available, but then I went to lowes.com and did a search for "square foot gardening soil" and it came up. It shows as $13.97 for 2 cu.ft. Alan

Re: Pre-mixed Mel's Mix is here!
I didn't see a price either when I first tried the link. Cleared the cookies (so it wouldn't search my local store) and then the price came up.
So...2 cubit feet of mix per bag, one would need 4 of these for a standard 4 x 4 box, right?
$13.97 x 4 = $55.88....ouch! I think I'll keep making my own. :)

Well, remember that you only buy it once and it has tons of compost blends in it too. Also remember to count your time in the mix. However, We always suggest that if you can find the materials, go ahead and make it yourself!pattipan wrote:I didn't see a price either when I first tried the link. Available In Colorado Springs?
Is the pre-mixed Mel's Mix available for sale anywhere in Colorado Springs?
I mixed up my own for my three 4x4 beds based on the recipe in the book, but I'm 1 to 2 inches low in my beds.
Maybe it doesn't even matter, but I'd like to fill them up to the top, and don't think I can buy stuff in small enough quantities to just top them off.

So I spoke to my local Lowe's and they won't get the Mel's Mix for me...but they found the closest store that carries it (in Arizona) and gave me the number so I could request them to ship me some.
Instead I just decided to mix up some more of my own. In the end, it actually took 10 cubic feet of Mel's Mix to fill up a single 4x4 bed...not the 8 cubic feet recommended in the book. So I concur with the other person in the forum who stated that you should take Mel's recommendations and increase them by 20% to get a full box.

I found the same thing to be true! My boxes need a little more MM anyway because they're on a slope, but even so, I thought I had enough, including the extra space, for 5 boxes, but I only had enough for 4, and those 4 still really need to be topped off. I'm going back on Monday to buy ingredients for a whole new batch for box #5 and to top off the others.

Re: Pre-mixed Mel's Mix is here!
I just checked with the web order help line. It is not available in GA. She did find 20 bags in Albuquerque. She thought about $8 a bag; that is $32 a normal bed! Can't beat that!!!
My 4ftx8ftx12in beds would be $128; I payed over $150 for my first cubic yard. Cubic yard is 27 cubic feet my beds are 32 cubic feet!
Get it in GA please

bulk mix
I need mels mix in bulk 173 cubic feet of it. To purchase this much would cost me almost $1800.00. How can I offset this cost? Can I call a nursery or garden supply store and order material thru them? Is that even feasible?

I second Pepper's plea for GA residents. I think it would be snapped up off the shelves if it were available here. A "win win" situation.

You can always request pre-made Mel's Mix at your local Home Depot, Lowe's or garden center.
Here is a link on ordering the mix from Home Depot:
