N&C Midwest—May 2021
Here we go into Spring and Summer! Looks like a nice weekend on the planner here. I removed one of my failing old legacy beds (re-purposed old window boxes that have been great really—and free!). Got most of the MM out of it, still have a bit to get out and into my 4’ fire ring bed.
This weekend, planning to start super hotties and maters, peppers. So melons, squash, cukes going into 3” peat pots.
Continuing to amend beds and South Annex containers.
What’s going on in your gardens?

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
Can you believe it is the first of May already! A lot of gardening work going on now. We're busy harvesting Lettuce, Spinach, Radishes, Bunching Onions, and Swiss Chard. The Tomatoes and Peppers are growing under lights, and will be ready for transplanting in the beds on Mother's Day.
The 2nd batch of bunching onion seedlings germinated yesterday, and will be ready for transplanting into the beds by the time many of the first batch have been pulled.

I did get my sunflowers started yesterday, 16 plants 1/2 red-orange-brown, half sunny yellow!
Need to get my parsley in and cilantro. Not really time-sensitive. Rained here today...we need rain.
Still didn’t get super hotties started, (melons, cukes, squashes) but have the soil prepared for peppers and marigolds, nasturtiums. The super hotties like peat pots, and I need to get a few more....

Still keeping tomatoes in now in the day... too cool. Hopefully I'll get potatoes planted this weekend (yeah I'm late but the seed potatoes just came today)

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
I'm late too, NR--just been a cold spring! I have seedling maters, and going to start peppers, etc. today. It is still in the 40s at this moment....cool. Nothing is growing, but hoping it's alive...
Fun surprise: dill from last year has self seeded and I just need to supplement the container! Yay! Needed a win.
So strange; every store is out of everything! No peat pots, no seeds....thanks, pandemic! At least people are gardening! Much cheaper than buying all this stuff for sure. Especially fresh herbs, one of the most cost effective things to buy IMO.

I've been in search of some Canada Red Rhubarb crowns, which all of the on-line nurseries seem to be out of stock on, and I called a local garden center to see if they might have some. They guy told me they are out of all rhubarb, and almost everything else. He said people have been buying annuals, and he keeps telling them that it is too early to plant them. But, they go ahead and take them home and plant them. Then they come back to buy some more because the first ones died, and he tells them it is too early to plant them. But, now he is out of almost everything....

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
No gardening work today, been raining since the middle of the night last night. The rain finally moved out of the area, after we had received 2.25" inches. Water is standing everywhere except the raised beds, they are doing fine. So, the only gardening I got to do was going out to pick some Kale and pull some bunching onions for dinner.

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
So bummed out to see that my squashes and melons had been vandalized by something in my basement! Must be a mouse—dug up the seeds and ate them. Direct sewn today AGAIN outside. Got a mouse to kill, sorry....can’t eat my stuff in the basement.
Pulled 4 radishes from the beds! Yum! Looks like I may get some lettuce leaves tomorrow.
Planted (direct) carrots, I like Tendersweet the best. And a row of golden beets. Soaking Dragon Tongue bush beans—they were so great last year, I love them. Tender, forgiving, and really gorgeous!
Maters up. Nothing else. Very late this year!

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
This evening I transplanted 250 Nebuka Evergreen bunching onion seedlings in the bed. This is the second batch of them - the first batch were transplanted in mid-April, and we are now pulling them for salads. By the time most of the first batch have been pulled, these new ones should be ready to start pulling.
Tested the soil temp in the beds this evening, and all of them registered between 62ºF and 65ºF. So, within the next couple days I'll be transplanting the peppers and tomatoes into the beds. The tomatoes have outgrown their pots, but the peppers are a little smaller than I'd like. But, they've all been hardened off for the past 10 days, and ready for some root space.

Transplanted the tomatoes into the raised beds this evening. Tomorrow evening I hope to transplant the peppers. Then all of my seedlings will be in the garden ready for summer.

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
Transplanted the peppers -- 6 each of Bell, Banana, and Jalapeno -- into the raised bed this evening. Also planted a Sweet Alyssum on the end of each bed as nectar plants for the beneficial insects. The summer gardens are beginning to take shape.

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
Yesterday I finally got the potatoes in their grow bags, and all but 5 of the tomatoes transplanted today.. need to fill more grow bags for the remaining. I've spilled off my patio
I also planted some of the beans and have been harvesting lettuce.

Re: N&C Midwest—May 2021
Nice, nrstooge! I have only cool crops in, along with direct sewn dragon ongues, carrots....etc. Cold here. After a hot hot spell. Stuff in my cold frame is bolting. Grrr! Had to bring tomatoes and peppers, squash in last night; gale force winds out there. Other stuff just brought to porch.
I think one more cold night (lol, look at me predicting nature). I would like to get my tomatoes in, they are ready.
