Which kale variety? Dino kale (which I thought was Italian kale) can actually grow into a small shrub or tree where I live (though I don't know if it can over winter in the pacific northwest). So you'd probably only want 1 per square.
But Russian kale, if you harvest the leaves small enough, can grow 4 to a square. Or at least mine have been able to.
As long as you have the seeds, you could start 4 (or maybe 5 arranged like "5" on a dice square) and then cut back later if it looks like too much.
