Is this Marjoram or Oregano or Something Else?
After cleaning out my overgrown, former herb garden I found this plant growing. According to PlantNet, they suggest it is Marjoram. I do not recall planting it, so it may be something else. The all knowing Google indicated that Marjoram is also known as Greek Oregano...which I may have planted.
thanks in advance

ralitaco, marjoram is in the oregano family and look very similar until the plants get bigger. When it comes to herbs if you rub your finger on the back of the leaves it should leave a scent that is identifiable. I am really going heavy into growing herbs this year, more as a learning process and because I crossed paths with a master herb grower last year, Sal Gilbertie and I bought his book on herbs and now feel confident enough to grow just about any of them. Here is a link to very good list and a good description of those herbs at The University of Illinois Extension.

Eat some or smash some of the leaves, oregano has a distinct delicious smell/taste. Marjoram is more floral and less spicy in my opinion. Both are perennial.
Herbs are some of the best bang for your buck in the garden; they are so expensive to buy! I grow as much as I can.

Thank you both. I will have to ask my DW if she wants me to keep it.

it's Cuban oregano. It's very beautiful when it get large and taste and smell just like oregano.

has55, the leaf edges don't look serrated enough to me to be Cuban oregano but as I said sometimes you have to go through an entire life cycle of an annual to really identify and sometimes even the roots need to be examined to be definitive. You could be right, tomato plants for example have 4 or 5 different leaves.

I think it may be greek oregano...I believe I recall planting that previously, but I did think I pulled them all out.

you're right, it's not Cuban. I had to take a closer look with my specs on.
