New & Different
What do you grow that's unusual, rare, exotic, different or just plain fun? It doesn't have to be edible -- it could be ornamental or crafty. I'm also looking for homegrown gift items, though it's probably too late for this year.

Re: New & Different
I don’t grow anything that I can’t eat...my sunflowers are very pretty. Nothing that you are looking for!

Re: New & Different
The only things I grow are either edible, or flowers for the pollinators. Well, I do grow decorative gourds, which are neither flowers nor edible, but they are decorative...

Same here, but I haven't tried gourds. Maybe that's what I'll add for next year.OhioGardener wrote:The only things I grow are either edible, or flowers for the pollinators. Well, I do grow decorative gourds, which are neither flowers nor edible, but they are decorative...

I think I found one -- not new to this board, but new to me.

You are right, CN! The only time I buy Burpee seeds is when the local big box store has them for at least 50% off.

I didn't grow this but it came up next to one of my boxes, a Dead Man's foot mushroom.

Re: New & Different
Migoosh! I hadn't planned on growing anything new this year, but I just placed my 2nd order. I really wanted 4th of Juyl tomatoes, but baker Creed doesn't carry them and everybody else wants too much for shipping, so I'm trying Sub-Arctic Plenty or World's Earliest Tomato instead.
Here's my latest order:

Re: New & Different
I wonder what the Baker Creek free seed pack is this year? The Black Vernissage they sent a couple years ago was a bust.
I am focusing my hopes and dreams on growing Snow Fairy tomatoes as they are no longer available anywhere. I only have a few seeds from last year's crop because I didn't realize they were off the market. I also want to try to grow a huge tomato that hopped into the SF packet by mistake. I want to say it has an ox-heart shape. I don't know if it is a hybrid or heirloom so it's just an experiment.

Re: New & Different
Sanderson, have you tried Renaissance Seeds for the Snow Fairy Tomato?

Re: New & Different
I have never heard of Snow Fairy...I have gown Oxheart (Court de Boeuf) and it had such huge fruits on it that it broke the supports! Beetles I think gave it to me.

You know, of course, that you can never have too many seeds, or see varieties!

I was afraid of that. Maybe I'll just take out a 2nd mortgage on the house and send the proceeds to Baker Creek to put "on account."OhioGardener wrote:countrynaturals wrote:I wasn't gonna order any more seeds, but I have to have that tomato, so here I go, again.

don't know what the delivery charge would be to CA but it would be 4.20 to GA.

Re: New & Different
Yolos, thank you. The photos indicate more of a large cherry variety. Audrey gave me some of her Snow Fairy seeds and then I bought some from Baker Creek. I'm just hoping the seeds I managed to save are viable.
The "ox-heart" shaped tomato that accidentally grew looks more like a smooth heart rather than the ribbed variety.

Re: New & Different
At least they don't charge you $8.95 shipping like one of their competitors (rhymes with Ferret Arboreal, sort of). The same competitor wanted an additional $3.95 to guarantee ground shipment. That's puzzling. Why would someone pay extra to guarantee it traveled in the slowest way possible?countrynaturals wrote:I was afraid of that. Actually, is there any other seed company that offers free shipping?

There are ver few that have free shipping now, but some that have free shipping with minimal purchase. For example, High Mowing Seeds has free shipping on order of $10 or more, and it doesn't take me long to get $10 worth of seeds in the cart. One of my favorite sites with free shipping used to be Planet Natural, but they went out of business. Most of my seeds now days come from Baker Creek.
High Mowing Seeds - Free shipping with $10 order
Mary's Heirloom Seeds - Free shipping with $10 order
Best Seeds Online - Free shipping, but very expensive seeds
