The Urban Farmer seed company has a web page titled, "Growing Library", that has a wealth of information such as a lot of PDF files comparing various varieties for vegetables & herbs, growing guides, and How-To guides.

I browsed some of the pdf's. It doesn't include all the many varieties but has some good basic info, especially for beginners. For example, I like that they included a map for onions, listed some low acid heirloom tomatoes, etc..
