Earthquake
Looks like today's earthquake has made national news. I'm up in the Central Valley so it was just an "event", like, "Wee, earthquake! Wow, that was a strong one." How are those of you in eastern LA, Kern County and Mohave Desert areas doing? Check in, please.
Re: Earthquake
Nowhere near. I saw it on CNN.AtlantaMarie wrote:Glad you're okay!
Suz? Where are you?
Re: Earthquake
Mild but noticeable and concerning roller down in OC. Much gentler but same feel as the '92 Landers 7.3

Re: Earthquake
Glad to hear you're okay. Saying prayers for the others. I have a niece and great niece and great nephew in OC. They didn't feel much.

Re: Earthquake
We felt tonight's very easily. Hope the people in Ridgecrest area are hanging in there, that was bigger original Magnitude rated 7.1. Downgraded to 6.9. Still about 5X yesterday and 10x on energy released.

Re: Earthquake
This evening's quake was much stronger, and longer! Here in Fresno, I got a little disoriented and dizzy sitting in my rolling computer chair. Daughter in Sacramento felt it. Her high rise apartment building is on rollers so it's safe but she sure felt it. My cousin in Westminster (Orange County) really got dizzy. She video-shot her swimming pool lapping over onto the patio. She said the street was wet from everyone's pools spilling.

I guess there was an injury this time. I sure hope this accelerating severity of aftershocks isn't going to be a trend.sanderson wrote:This evening's quake was much stronger, and longer! We were watching the World Series of Poker, live from Las Vegas. Even the Rio was affected. Those huge lights were swaying and play was suspended.
Re: Earthquake
Listening to the news last night, the geologists said this is more of the norm than the 2 relatively) quiet decades. There was a 1 foot slip along the fault line(s). It was less than 1 mile deep so it could be felt far away.
Re: Earthquake
Landers 7.3 was my first quake in Cali. That summer shook all summer long with 4 & 5s. The next year had lots of littles. Then Northridge in '94.
Those were all relatively far from me. I've experienced one quake were the epicenter less than a mile away, actually only a few hundred yards In was minor, like a 3.4M. It cracked the thincoat on the qall, knock over the stuff the mantle, and basically felt like someone managed to give my whole house a kick in the *ss. We were sitting and all got jolted like when you slam the brakes to avoid a low speed bumper cruncher. It was a strange one though because there was no shaking, it was all just one wallop.
It really left me no desire to be anywhere near the epicenter of something over 5 which quickly is closing in a 100x the power

Re: Earthquake
Hubby was in one on the top floor of an L.A. office building, back in the day. The building was built to take it, but Bob got a nice little ride.
Re: Earthquake
Oooh I know how he felt, in 2001 we had a 6.8 here in Puget Sound. I was doing home health care at the time; took my patient to his Endocrinologist on 5th floor, whole building was swaying. My autistic patient was freaking out! I grabbed him and dove under the desk and had my arms and legs wrapped around him, holding him there. Yelled at the Dr to stand in the door casing. Stupid Dr reported me to APS for unlawfully restraining my patient.

Oh, Bunny! I sure hope you got the upper hand on that APS case. What were you supposed to do, dive under the desk and yell at your patient to duck and cover!!

Oh yes, lol, the APS nurse thought the Dr was incredibly stupid too! The patient's family was amazed at the Dr's response and wondered why he didn't do the protecting, why he thought he should waste APS time and resources. Gotta love well educated stupid people!!
