N&C Midwest: June 2019!
Time is flying! Pulled all bolted spinach (left the Bok Choi for the flowers!) and staked and suckered tomatoes...
Today will up-pot my sunflowers, since garden area isn’t ready and they are too big for their starter pots.
Will plant some carrots and potatoes, and will have room for a few late-comers in the unlabeled pepper and tomato ranks...
What’s going on in your gardens?

Today I put up the tomato cages, and attached mylar strips to the tops of them to keep the birds from sitting on them and leaving their calling cards all over the leaves. Some of the tomato plants are almost 3' tall already, and full of blooms.

I have some extra tomato plants....grrr. They were late to the party. I will give them away. I have room for the peppers! Also give away the eggplant....

Ask, and you shall receive... I went out and took a couple pictures this morning of the cages with mylar strips on them - the pictures didn't come out real clear due to the pending thunderstorm with black clouds overhead. But, hopefully you can get an idea of how they are set up. The mylar strips flip in the breeze which the birds do not like and they will not set on top of the cages as they used to do. These are the the Texas Tomato Cages, which are 20" diameter by 6' high (4 of them fit nicely in a 4'x4' raised bed.
The mylar strips are cut from the bags that coffee grounds come in from Starbucks. I cut the strips about 1" wide and the length of the coffee beans bag. The strip is fold in half and looped over the top of the cage and stapled together. The wind blows them around on the bar they are on, so they are never in the same place.

Re: N&C Midwest: June 2019!
So, picked about 2#of strawberries! YUM! Gonna make strawberry rhubarb pie. Will post, my mom’s recipe

Pulled a bolting mustard...planted the last 4 unnamed peppers. And one mater that I believe is Brandywine based on leaf shape
Gave away 4 unnamed maters and a Ping Tung eggplant....My friend says she doesn’t like eggplant. I say, try this!

Re: N&C Midwest: June 2019!
Just put in 3 Yukon Gold potatoes, and one Ambrosia start from the nursery. My Blacktail Mountain watermelon didn’t happen.
Kinda breezy and humid. Not bad though. Peas blooming! Can’t wait for my sugar snaps!
I think everything is in at this point...leaves will be bolting and making space for other stuff, I love SFG!!!

Mulched the bush beans, kale, and chard with compost today, so they'll be ready for the heat wave when it arrives... Had about 1/8" of rain last night, and every thing is growing geat in the beds.

Re: N&C Midwest: June 2019!
My raised bed was delivered late this afternoon.. so I've started filling it with Mel's Mix (only half way done) .. the planter was to be 4x4 but it is 6.25x3 - he even built a trellis on it for me. LOTS of goodies are going to come from it that is for sure.

Re: N&C Midwest: June 2019!
Noticed an odd behavior with the summer squash today. All four of the crookneck and all four of the bush zucchini plants are blooming, but they only have female blooms. Not a single plant has a male bloom on it, so I can't even hand pollinate them. Maybe it is just a little too early for them to be setting fruit, or something. Seems odd, though, since usually they get all male blooms first, and then the female blooms begin.

I always get male blossoms first, too, but it has been a strange year all around -- bugs eating my catnip -- no peas until June -- still not a single strawberry blossom. Everything seems different this season.OhioGardener wrote:Noticed an odd behavior with the summer squash today. I grow Partenon Zucchini and it is parthenocarpic and do not need a male/female pollination. Any female should turn into a zucchini even if there is no male around. I harvested 3 zucchini before I even saw one male. Same with the cucumbers I grow.countrynaturals wrote:I always get male blossoms first, too, but it has been a strange year all around -- bugs eating my catnip -- no peas until June -- still not a single strawberry blossom. OG, that is weird...it has just been such a strange season so far. But that seems super aberrant...
Waiting for heat wave...lol!

Found a couple recipes for strawberry jam; I am going to put up some freezer strawberry jam this weekend! New horizon for me! Also there is a version to add rhubarb, so might do a few of those too!

The raised beds are doing great in spite of the constant rain that we seem to be having.
The tomato plants are full of green tomatoes

Been eating the Curly Kale and Rainbow Chard for about 6 weeks, and it is still going strong

The Blue Lake Green Beans are starting to get blooms, and the Carrots on the end of the bed are really growing

Onions, Lettuce, and Radishes - lots of Onions...

The Peppers are growing nicely with their Crimson Clover living mulch - the clover has been cut off, and has regrown

Been enjoying the Banana Peppers in salads, and have had one Stuffed Banana Pepper casserole.

Re: N&C Midwest: June 2019!
So first day of summer, yesterday...finally nice here. They pushed back rain until late Sunday so maybe I can mow?
Picked Strawberries; for every one picked, I pitched 5 into the yard. Rotten and mold covered...sad. So much rain...it has been awful.
Got rid of lettuces, bolting. Tied up and tweaked maters. Picked peas; sugar snaps and regular Straight arrow...(note to self, don’t plant bothe types of peas next to each other...cannot tell them apart!)
