N&C Midwest: April is here! 2019
Yes, it’s April! For most of us, it’s still cold, but there is promis in the forecast. For me, no idea what is out there where I put my direct seeds...but seedlings OK. Hardening off lettuces and chard. Not growing much...
Love the banter on the March thread!

It is nice seeing the Rhubarb plants starting to come up in their new Round Foot Garden beds (3' diameter; 7Ft2). The Rhubarb plants were moved into these fire rings last year to keep their crowns from rotting due to the excessively wet spring we had. They did really well after moving into their own beds.

Interesting to hear that, OG, because I have lost numerous attempts at rhubarb which I LOVE to drowning...moved mine up the yard...hope it is alive. You guys are ahead of us!
On the seed starting front: None of my peppers germinated; will re-seed tomorrow. Will up-pot the basil. Harden off the leaves...lookin good. Maters up.
Will venture out to see what happened with the direct seeded stuff!!!!

The radishes, spinach, and leaf lettuce is up in the raised bed. Will plant the second batch of radishes today.

Re: N&C Midwest: April is here! 2019
I just checked my bed; radishes are maybe up, but nothing else but garlic is visible. We have had some really cold nights. Hopefully things will peek out this week!
Re-seeded all peppers ( ) cilantro, parsley, dill and marigolds/nasturtiums. On pad under lights. Up-potted basil, it and lettuces are basking on the patio! Hardening off...

Nice, OG! I burned my basil...it will live, but it is now stunned thanks to me...dang it. I don’t have the strength to look at the stupid peppers...and account for the maters...
Lettuces now on patio, going in tomorrow. Basil taking a day off from full spectrum sunlight...

OhioGardener wrote:Planted the Bunching Onion seedlings today. Sixteen per square, which will be thinned as they mature and are pulled for salads. Only had 142 seedlings, so one square only got 14 plants....
I only got about a dozen of the 72 onion seeds I planted. That will get me started, but I will start another batch, soon.

I tried to kill my basil, too. I had it in a pot on the balcony and didn't realize it was under the eaves. All that beautiful rain, and my poor basil almost died of thirst.

Well, it is gonna be cold here now and tonight. I think the lettuces are more or less hardened off, but I am gonna wait until the weekend to put them out there...
Just up-potted 5 unknown tomatoes in the basements (too tall for the starter cell thing). I have 2 eggplant seedlings (dangerously pulled one from the cell with 2 seedlings and stuck it in! Worked!).
Have to site my cold frame this weekend, as my lawn mower got serviced and is coming home tomorrow! They are occupying the same space, lol!

The radishes and leaf lettuce are up in the beds, but haven't seen any spinach sprouting yet. The sowbugs were eating the tender leaves of the lettuce, so I sprinkled some diatomaceous earth over and around the plants. Should soon be eating some fresh Easter Egg and Daikon radishes on the fresh Black Seeded Simpson lettuce salad, along with some green onions dipped in Ranch Dressing. Yum, yum....

Re: N&C Midwest: April is here! 2019
I have an active rabbit in my bed. She doesn’t care for the garlic, mustard or radishes. She does like the freshly transplanted lettuces! Who knows what will get in my mouth! Oh well...
Weirdest seed start ever. Just went down to check on #3 on peppers and #2 on maters...zilch. And weirdly, green moldy/stuff as a skim on the cells...2 things up, not sure what they are...
PLAN: this weekend, or maybe earlier: ditch the whole blighted thing (I use sterile starter mix and new cells eatery year, mind you..) and re-plant AGAIN peppers and some maters and nasturtiums???? They ALWAys come up!

Re: N&C Midwest: April is here! 2019
An early morning hail storm damaged the tulips & daffodils that were in bloom, and nearly destroyed the leaf lettuce that we were enjoying. The second planting of leaf lettuce has not germinated yet, so they should be good. The radish leaves were badly damaged, but I think they will recover. The Daikon radishes may be done since they just germinated a couple days ago and had not yet developed their true leaves. Such is spring weather....

Re: N&C Midwest: April is here! 2019
After 3 days of rain, finally got some garden work done today. Finished topping off the last bed with compost to get it ready for spring planting. Planted some beets, carrots, spinach, and radish seeds in the raised beds. And planted a couple new rhubarb seedlings that I started a couple months ago.
Not many fresh vegetables to eat right now, but enjoying the flowers the brighten the yard.
Bleeding Heart
Creeping Phlox
Grape Hyacinths
Tulips - First year the pinkish one has shown up

My spinach and radishes are up.. but not the peas.. will replant those (might have been eaten by a squirrel). Rain overnight so pots will be moist.

My doves throw 3 sticks together and call it their nursery. I don't know how they manage to survive.
