Tepary Beans? Empty Tepary Beans?

Post  countrynaturals 8/27/2017, 6:03 pm

Anybody else grow these? It's my first year, they're starting to produce, and I can't find any info on when and how to harvest and how to prepare/preserve them. It's probably not rocket science. I imagine they're a lot like limas (which I'm also growing) but I'd love to hear from someone with some expertise.

I don't have any experience with them.  What I am reading is certainly interesting.  They are a different New World bean species than the regular beans or Lima beans or running beans.  Sounds like they are usually dryed and are extremily heat and drought tolerant.  I guess for South West Three Sister gardens these are what was grown.
Look at them all!  https://shop.nativeseeds.org/collections/tepary-beans

Recipes seem to assume a dry bean that you soak and simmer a long time.

CN,  Where did you buy your seeds? Never mind. Baker Creek, right?

Nope. Sustainable Seed Co. right here in CA. Great prices and free shipping, but not a wide selection.

CN, I just received my seed order from Baker Creek, including the Blue Speckled tepary beans. How did yours turn out?

Fabulous! I just didn't plant enough of them. We ate them all fresh. This year I'm going to double my planting and try to get some to dry and also some for seed for 2019. Cool

Right. I get it! Yes, I shucked them and cooked them fresh. I did the same with Limas and cow peas. I never had enough to dry them, first.
