Can you use Coir (coconut coir) instead of peat moss? Coir is much easier to obtain and much cheaper. Just starting square foot gardening, so have a lot to learn. Thanks

The short answer is yes you can use coir.

I'd take advantage of the cost savings and focus on getting quality compost to start.

Good luck

The slightly longer answer is to research the brand of coir. As part of the manufacturing process, the coconuts are soaked in water, often sea water. Some brands will thoroughly rinse the product for you as part of their process, some will not. This leads to some brands having a LOT of salt in it. From my research, a lot of people reccomends thoroughly rinsing coconut coir before using it, just yo be sure.

Jenex, Welcome to the Forum from the Northern Hemisphere (California). Yes you can, and probably have to as you live in Australia where coir is cheaper and more prevalent that peat moss. The packaging probably states whether it has been washed. Do check out other posts from Australia. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/f19-australia

Hi Jenex. Welcome from Atlanta, GA (SE USA)!

Looks like you're question's been answered, so I won't add more here. But I will ask what you're going to be growing & tell you that we like pictures... :-)
