Can't seem to wrap my li'l pea brain around that way of using oats, Rooster...even steel cut.  But hey...why not use them in a savory dish...?   It's not like they are naturally sweet.

This morning I made a giant fruit bowl out of what was left in a watermelon I'd scooped and eaten most of the meat out of.  Just kept cutting up and adding into the shell bowl one of all the fruits I could find, even frozen.  Threw in some sunflower seeds and stirred.  Ate some, covered the rest and stuck in the fridge.

Last night's supper was half a spag squash, nuked, fluffed and eaten right out of it's shell, topped with spag sauce and parm.  Just like the watermelon, it was cut in two across the short rather than down the length.  The other half is in the fridge uncooked.

Eating out of the shells means no dishes to wash!  They just get tossed in to the compost pile.

Wonder what else we can do that with...?

Stuffed acorn squash is additively amazing!

I know. Everyone is so used to consuming oatmeal sweet, but it really is delicious prepared as savory. I love it with just EVOO, grated parm, and cracked black pepper. The insoluble fiber is great for you, and it's very filling to boot.
Try it!

Rooster, how do you cook the steel cut oats that you use in that recipe? I prepare oats by cooking (toasting) them in coconut oil and then putting them into simmering water/milk until most of the liquid has been absorbed/evaporated. The ratio being 1 cup oats, 3 cups water and 1 cup milk (almond, etc.) and a pinch of salt. Would that work for the cooked oats in your recipe?

@trolleydriver that will work. I cook mine in much the same way,  but only use water.
I put all kinds of stuff in with oatmeal. Grilled or steamed vegetables. Sometimes I melt American cheese singles or Velveeta into it while hot, and add chopped ham and tomatoes.
Oatmeal is still yummy with lots of butter and honey or brown sugar. I am just really trying to stay away from sugar as much as possible.
