Trellis pest cover combo?
I am a first year gardener. I love SFG and am so pleased with everything growing! I made pest covers out of chicken wire per Mel's instructions -only now I am stuck...
I need to trellis my vegies -but how do I keep the boxes covered and the plants trellised? I need to beable to remove the cages to water, etc but need the protection?
HELP??

Re: Trellis pest cover combo?
Don't know that I can help you out this year...but what I do is lay the chicken wire flat across my boxes and staple it to the top/sides. Then I cut holes just big enough for the plants to grow through. I use the plastic chicken wire so it's not hard to cut - I just use a pair of scissors. This keeps the local cats from using my "deluxe litter box." This year I just pulled it off and threw it away (since the plants wouldn't line up again due to roating crop/different plants this year. It may not be the best solution - but it works for me and isn't too cost intensive.
As for your situation...could you re-work your framed cages so they just cover the squares that aren't involved in the trellis? What kind of pest problems are you still having - even with the plants growing?

Re: Trellis pest cover combo?
Thanks so much for your response -I will do that next year!! I too have neighborhood tom cats who love the delux cat boxes! :-) I think I have an idea. I will cut a slit down the middle and on the top and bottom and open the wire like a european window or like workign shutters. Then I will line up the shutter of wire with the outside of the trellis. Think it will work?
