Rain, rain, rain...when to plant? Empty Rain, rain, rain...when to plant?

Post  bonnie0128 5/13/2010, 12:48 pm

So it is now 10 days past my last frost date and it has been raining nearly every day. At what point is it ok to plant? I don't want the seeds to get drowned or washed away! The forcast is calling for no rain Sat and Sun but then chance of rain M-T-W. How long should I delay my direct-sow planting?

Thanks!

What were you thinking about direct sowing? Beside rain, how has the temperature been? I am assuming similar to the muggy crap we've been having in michigan.

I bet you could direct sow, but Im gonna wait on most. I just dont want my seeds to float away or rot!

What does our weekend forecast look like?

I need to plant: cucumber, winter squash, and zucchini (direct sow) and I have some tomatoes and peppers that could probably be transplanted into the gardens.

For the next 10 days the lowest low is supposed to be 45 - most being around 50 and the highs between 60-70 (most low 60s). There is a chance of rain here most days - mostly 40% chance or less...but it'll be mostly cloudy, I bet. Today and tomorrow we are expecting storms...but a high of 75 today.

How jealous I am! Between yesterday and today will will get about 1-3 inches of rain, but it seems like much more than that. My plant babies are CRYING for a break and to sun bathe. Our temps wont go up until this weekend (a little) then back down, then back up next weekend. all which chances of rain of course.

I say if you are able to get i the garden, start some of your succession planting!

Rain, rain, rain...when to plant? Empty I'd be happy to take some of your rain

Post  kiwirose 5/13/2010, 4:11 pm

I havne't had measureable rain in weeks Sad

That being said, I am the queen of impatience and if I were in your situation and really wanted to sow (or had to), then perhaps you could put a little raincoat over your garden? plastic garbage bags held up by sticks perhaps or even just cardboard - just don't leave it on too long or you will run the risk of either rot or germination and no where to grow.

Maybe we could average the rain between you and me and we would both be happy?

Hope you dry out soon

I direct-seeded some time ago, and I am still seeing shoots pop up after I thought they had rotted in-ground. It's been an awfully cold spring, and my garden is on the north side of the house to boot.

The seeds I planted have seen rain, snow, frost, a deep freeze, and hail since they were planted just over a week ago. They are sprouting! I planted some of them while it was raining and they came up fine.
Go for it! Seeds need moisture to germinate. Mel's mix drains well enough they probably won't rot.

Rain, rain, rain...when to plant? Empty That will teach me not to complain about lack of rain

Post  kiwirose 5/18/2010, 9:09 am

we had over 6 inches since Sunday night... phew - but yesterday I had a bunch of seeds germinate (or the dirt just washed away - but who cares, I now have little plants), and none of my tomatoes broke. I spent too much of the day looking at the doplar radar from work worrying that my plants would break from the heavy rain, but it looks like there were no casualties - phew. And I won't even need to water for a few days - a nice change!
