Re: heat zone map
Interesting. I knew about the hardiness zones but not the heat zones, which add another factor to successful summer gardening. California is so long latitude-wise, that we also have different growing needs.
Re: heat zone map
in the deep steamy south its technically not that hot compared to other places. We very rarely reach 100F its not just the heat that factors here its the combination of heat and humidity. A heavy morning dew followed by 90 degrees will steam plants and wilt them. bottom rot is very common problem on veggies. Our cucs are slowing down and beginning to suffer from this. The only thing we can grow in the heat of summer is okra, long beans and peppers. If any one else from the steamy area below 30eth parallel has any other suggestions we would love to hear them. I know its hard to believe but winter is a better growing season for us than summer.
