Fairie Gardens?

Just wondered if any SFGers out there have dedicated a square to two in their yard for a fairie garden.  Most serious gardeners are probably too busy plotting and planning for such a frivolous endeavor, but I think it an interesting bit of whimsy and would be a fun thing to do when introducing kids to gardening (SFG or otherwise).

One of the large plant nurseries in our area has a display dedicated to fairie garden paraphenalia and there are all sorts of posts for the hobby on Pinterest. I've been thinking of crafting a few items as gifts for my fairie-obsessed neighbor, or maybe to sell at local craft fairs.  I'm even considering tucking a few miniature items into my vegetable garden...

My wife has been talking about building one but not in the SFG.  Her initial thought was to put it under a large pine tree in our backyard or in one of her perennial beds.

I recently had my car in for repairs and while I waited I went for a walk in the nearby residential neighbourhood.  I was walking along the the side of the road and noticed something different about a nearby tree. On closer inspection I found this Smurf Garden.

It's in the back of my mind. Would love one if I ever get done nursing everything else that's in need of attention.
Only good fairies of course, as sometimes I think I already have some, shall we say... mischevious ones hanging around.

A Smurf garden; how fun! I really like that little structure...

Maybe a nice little garden would appease the mischevious ones. 

The fairies found Katie's yard first, but it's only a matter of time before they discover my new sfg.

Thanks, Ginger. All of it came from donations to the sanctuary. We get some really neat things. 

My wife just set some up with our kids yesterday. Not in any of our garden beds though.  Here's what they created.

A village! I love it!  What a great way to show off a mini bird house collection...and every yard has a swing...

Thanks for sharing, GrowRunner. This is great in so many ways: your kids are getting outside and actively engaging their imaginations; it's a fun way to recycle, re-purpose, and reuse things, and gets the kids thinking in that direction; it's a simple way to beautify an otherwise unused space, making memories and giving your children a positive experience "in the garden."  Please give your wife my compliments on a job-well-done.

I believe something truly magical happens when we get our hands in the dirt, with a purpose to nurture or build. It's so easy to become driven and drained by every day life. 'Gardening,' in whatever form we exercise, slows us down and brings our focus to achieving positive results.  When we garden, we are literally 'grounded,' and reconnected with nature. Somehow, this productive pass-time helps heal our soul.
